Some athletes in some high school sports from the Island’s Catholic schools will return to the practice field on Monday, and that’s a good thing.
It will be the first such teams will take the field officially since the coronavirus pandemic struck in mid-March.
It’s the start of what hopefully will lead to a return to normalcy, albeit a slow one. Expect to see some social-distancing rules in place and some face masks being worn.
Cross country, soccer and football teams will be out running through drills, each one taking it slow to get back in shape for the season.
Some seasons will start the first week in October.
Of course, the Catholic High School Football League (CHSFL) season won’t start until March, but will implement a non-contact flag football loop in the fall to get give the players some kind of competition.
The return to the field is just for the Catholic schools here on the Island.
Meanwhile, the Public Schools Athletic League (PSAL) is still in shutdown mode and there’s no telling when it will give schools the green light to get back on the field.
Part of a statement on the PSAL website updated on Sept. 8 states this: “Due to the current conditions of New York City and our continued commitment to prioritize student safety while we prepare for school opening, the PSAL fall season continues to be postponed until further notice.”
That’s bad news, of course, for the majority of the high school athletes on the Island.
But at least for a day on Monday, some of the borough’s athletes will get to experience what it feels like to be a high school athlete, to put down the books for a while.
It’ll be a good a thing for those schools’ athletes, coaches and athletic directors who have been dormant, but itching to go for the first time in six months.
