LOS ANGELES — Between them, Marcus Morris Sr. and Landry Shamet — who together have averaged 19 points per game in the 10 contests since Morris became a Clipper — combined for a single point in Sunday’s 112-103 loss to the Lakers.
In 29 minutes of action, Morris missed all nine shots he took, including his seven attempts from 3-point range. Shamet had only three attempts, including one from deep, and he made none of them in his 8:25 on the court.
Clippers forward Kawhi Leonard shrugged it off: Sometimes shots just don’t fall.
“They just didn’t knock down shots tonight, it was one of those days,” Leonard said. “They got some good looks; just didn’t go down.”
Clippers Coach Doc Rivers ventured that shooting struggles can crop up when players are adjusting to changes in their roles — something both players are dealing with.
Morris has vastly different duties in L.A. than he did in New York, where he was expected to do carry a large part of the offense on a Knicks team that was 16-36 when he was dealt.
“Obviously, you have great scorers on this (Clippers) team,” he said Sunday. “I’m cool with playing a role. I’ve been playing a significant role on a bunch of teams in this league. This is no different … I’m here to help win. I need to be better regardless of what my role is: I’m a veteran, a pro. I just need to be better. I didn’t feel like I impacted this game to the best of my abilities, even without scoring.”
“(Morris) will get it but it’s going to take time,” Rivers said. “I talked to him before the game and told him, ‘Just be patient, it’s going to happen.’ It’s tough when you go from a place where you touch the ball probably every possession to every other, every five, and usually it’s a ball swing for a shot. It’s a role he can do, I have 100% confidence in that, but it is, it takes some getting used to.”
For Shamet’s part, his playing time has diminished from the 29.2 minutes he was averaging through his first 38 games. Now that the Clippers are healthy and have welcomed aboard guard Reggie Jackson (who is averaging 20.1 minutes per game), Shamet came into Sunday’s game averaging 20.1 minutes of court time in seven games since the All-Star break.
“It is such a different role for (Shamet) too in a lot of ways,” Rivers added. “Sham’s minutes have been cut drastically and … he’s gotta get comfortable in his role. This is why it’s important now, we finally got a healthy team, guys can get adjusted to their roles and we can grow from there.”
HEY, BRO
The Morris twins showed up to Staples Center together Sunday and then played against each other for the first time as representing L.A.’s respective squads.
For the Lakers, Markieff finished with four points on 2-for-5 shooting in 16 minutes.
“It was special, very special, and not only for us but for my family,” Marcus said after the game. “My grandfather, who is 90, enjoys watching us, enjoys the game of basketball. It’s special for our family. We don’t take it for granted — any of this — because we both worked extremely hard to get to this position. We’re both just equally happy for each other.”
