KALAMAZOO, MI — Some voters needed to ring a buzzer before being let in to their polling location to vote in Kalamazoo Tuesday, and one voter said it caused some confusion at the polls.
A voter who went to cast her ballot about noon on Tuesday, March 10, at Parkwood-Upjohn Elementary School said the door was locked and saw no instruction for voters arriving to the city polling location.
Voter Myra Wynd said she brought the issue to the attention of officials at the polling location, and an additional sign was placed to alert voters of the buzzer next to the door.
Kalamazoo City Clerk Scott Borling said a door being locked at the location and some others is not anything new. Some locations, such as schools, have to maintain the locked door because the buildings are not set up to keep student areas separate from polling locations, Borling explained.
After being told about the voter’s complaint, Borling sent someone from the clerk’s office to the location and noted the signs posted outside the school instructing voters to ring the bell for access to the building.
Wynd said it was confusing at first, though he she understands the concern for child safety and why the location was locked.
Voters across the state Tuesday will help choose Michigan’s Democratic nominee for president, among other things. Some in Kalamazoo County also have local ballot proposals to consider, including a tax supporting Kalamazoo’s public transportation system.
