Some Alabama schools won’t open Monday, closing three days earlier than planned - AL.com

Some Alabama schools notified parents Saturday afternoon they will not be open on Monday, pre-empting the planned Thursday closure of all K-12 public schools statewide.

All K-12 public schools in Alabama will close at the end of Wednesday, March 18, in response to the coronavirus pandemic, Gov. Kay Ivey announced Friday during a press conference in Montgomery. Schools could re-open on April 6, depending on the situation at that time.

AL.com will update this list as we learn of closures.

Closed effective immediately:

  • Alabaster City Schools
  • Albertville City Schools - “All school administrators, 12 month employees, custodial staff, and CNP managers should report to work sites Monday morning at 8:00 am. All other employees should report to school campuses on Monday, April 6th.”
  • Autauga County Schools - “10, 11, and 12 month employees will report to work on Monday, March 16, 2020.”
  • Bessemer City Schools - "The school system will provide more information regarding possible feeding locations Monday.ALL 12/11-month Central Office Employees, School Administrators and Custodians should report to work Monday, March 16, 2020. All other employees are exempt from this expectation. "
  • Boaz City Schools - “Our CNP Team is currently working on a plan to provide meals for our students during the school closure. We will share those plans after we receive guidance from the Alabama State Department of Education. All school system 12 month employees should report to their work site on Monday at 8 a.m. All other employees should report to their school campuses on Monday, April 6th unless instructed otherwise.”
  • Birmingham City Schools - “The district will offer meal services weekdays at 10:30 a.m. until 1 p.m. for students during the closure. Grab-and-go meal options will be provided at all schools Monday, March 16, 2020 through Wednesday, March 18, 2020. The district will offer expanded meal services beginning Thursday, March 19, 2020 through Friday, April 3, 2020 at select locations set to be announced Monday. An extended meal service plan will be provided as needed following April 5, 2020.”
  • Chilton County Schools
  • Fairfield City Schools - “Fairfield City Schools will close for students and employees effective immediately.”
  • Guntersville City Schools - “All 12-month employees, please report to the Central Office on Monday, March 16th.”
  • Homewood City Schools - “Information regarding breakfast and lunch services for students who need it will be sent out on Monday, March 16.”
  • Hoover City Schools - “All 12-month employees are asked to report to work on Monday, March 16. Student meals will be available at Green Valley Elementary School next week (Monday-Friday) between 11:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. These will be drive-up, grab-and-go bagged meals."
  • Jefferson County Schools - “We have prepared some resources for our students and parents. We will communicate this information on Monday, March 16th. These resources include academic engagement information, child nutrition information for student meals while we are closed, and the preparation of our facilities for students and staff to return to campus.”
  • Lee County Schools
  • Limestone County Schools - “All 12 month employees are to report to work Monday only for a regular workday.”
  • Madison County Schools - “We will be providing information on food programs on social media and through local media outlets for those that need it.”
  • Marshall County Schools - “Contact information and other resources such as a listing of local food banks will be located on our website. We have received several calls from individuals and churches from our incredible communities asking how they can help. We encourage all who would like to give to the cause to donate to our local food banks.”
  • Midfield City Schools
  • Mountain Brook City Schools - Plans for e-learning are canceled. Schools are closed effective immediately.
  • Oneonta City Schools
  • Pelham City Schools - “Employees will receive an e-mail from the Superintendent by Sunday providing further instructions and details related to the updated school closure dates.”
  • Pell City Schools
  • Phenix City Schools - “Effective immediately, there will be no activity on any campus. More information is forthcoming via email, app, social media, and website.”
  • Shelby County Schools - “Since students and employees will not be reporting to their schools on Monday, e-learning instructional activities will not be required during this time. Information regarding breakfast and lunch meal services for those students who need it will be communicated during the day on Monday, March 16, 2020. Schools will remain closed until Monday, April 6. 12-month employees and school nurses should report to work on Monday, March 16."
  • St. Clair County Schools - “We plan to serve meals in the designated sites beginning Monday.”
  • Tallassee City Schools
  • Tarrant City Schools - “Tarrant City Schools will be closed effective immediately. 12 month employees report on Monday 3/16.”
  • Trussville City Schools - “12 Month Employees should report to their school/department site Monday only to prepare for the long term closure.”
  • Vestavia City Schools - “Students and employees will not report to their schools next week. Schools will remain closed until Monday, April 6.”
  • Winfield City Schools - “All employees will report to work tomorrow (Monday).”

E-learning Monday, no students at school

  • Athens City Schools - e-learning Monday through Wednesday, then closed Thursday.

Schools will close beginning Tuesday, March 17

These school districts were already planning to close Monday, March 16, for spring break.

  • Auburn City Schools (had announced plans to extend their March 9 spring break by one week to include the week of March 16)
