AT&T sets May 27 launch for HBO Max, with some customers getting free access - The Dallas Morning News

Dallas-based AT&T will launch its new video streaming service HBO Max on May 27 and plans to provide free access to some existing internet, wireless and video streaming customers.

The new services combines HBO’s content with TV shows and movies from Warner Bros., New Line Cinema, TBS, TNT and the Cartoon Network, as well as original content.

HBO Max will cost $14.99 a month and include 10,000 hours of programming at launch.

AT&T’s WarnerMedia said Tuesday that several new original titles will headline the service, including a scripted comedy starring actress Anna Kendrick called Love Life, Sesame Street spinoff The Not Too Late Show with Elmo and 2020 Sundance Film Festival documentary On The Record. More originals, including a highly anticipated Friends cast reunion special, are expected to hit the platform in the summer and fall.

WarnerMedia is leveraging its parent company AT&T to bundle and introduce the service to existing customers as it enters a crowded streaming market that already includes Disney Plus and Apple TV Plus.

“With AT&T as a key distribution partner, we expect HBO Max to achieve an impressive level of scale and reach at launch,” WarnerMedia Entertainment CEO Bob Greenblatt said in a statement.

According to AT&T, tens of millions of its customers will have immediate access to HBO Max on launch including current HBO subscribers, DirecTV Premier, U-Verse and AT&T TV Now Max as well as AT&T Internet 1000 customers.

HBO Max also will be included in AT&T’s unlimited elite wireless plan, with free trial periods available to other wireless subscribers. The company recommends using its MyAT&T app to determine eligibility.

AT&T has previously said it intends to invest $4 billion building out HBO Max over the next three years. It expects the service to produce $5 billion annually in revenue by 2025.
