Confirmed infections in the U.S. exceeded 735,000 on Sunday, with more than 39,000 dead, according to data from Johns Hopkins University. Western economies now account for some two-thirds of coronavirus cases around the world, according to Johns Hopkins.
In New York, confirmed cases rose above 242,000, but Gov. Andrew Cuomo has suggested that the state’s infection rate has plateaued and is starting to descend. Mr. Cuomo said Saturday the number of people currently hospitalized in the state for Covid-19 was below 17,000 compared with about 18,000 at its peak.
Still, he said that 2,000 people testing positive for Covid-19 were admitted to New York hospitals on Friday, which is about the same number as in late March when the health crisis was intensifying. “Happy days are not here again,” Mr. Cuomo said.
States such as Vermont and Minnesota are already easing some coronavirus-related restrictions, but California Gov. Gavin Newsom has said measures there won’t be lifted until there is a greater capacity to test people for the virus and the state is able to respond more quickly to fresh outbreaks.

In Texas and Maryland, groups of protesters Saturday called on legislators to relax restrictions designed to reduce the spread of the virus. Texas Gov. Greg Abbott has already set the state on a path to reopening, saying that shopping, hiking and some medical procedures may restart as soon as next week.
Some other countries reported improvements in daily infection rates. China on Sunday reported 16 new cases—its lowest level since mid-March—with no reported deaths.
In South Korea, eight new cases were reported Sunday—the first time since mid-February the country’s daily tally was in single digits. Though it has extended its social-distancing measures, Seoul said it may gradually ease restrictions in coming weeks.

Japan reported 566 new cases on Saturday, down from 682 day earlier.
Australia on Sunday called for a review of the origin and management of the global health crisis. Foreign Minister Marise Payne said such a review, taking in information from governments around the world, would need transparency from all countries and “transparency from China most certainly,” including in its interactions with the World Health Organization.
China and the Trump administration have traded barbs over the extent to which China provided public disclosures on the provenance of the coronavirus. Beijing has denied it concealed information and has defended its responses to the outbreak as open and transparent.
In Hong Kong, where daily infection rates have declined to single digits over the past week, police arrested 14 pro-democracy activists on Saturday. Hong Kong and mainland Chinese authorities are seeking to end nearly a year of turmoil in the city, after citizens first took to the streets in June to oppose a since-withdrawn extradition bill.
The coronavirus had already caused a winding down of rallies and protests earlier this year, as residents shunned large gatherings. Fearing that big demonstrations would spur a resurgence of the virus, organizers of the protest movement say they won’t immediately take to the streets to rally against the government’s latest action.
