Although summer is normally peak travel season, 2020 was a year like no other. With many borders still closed and flight schedules slashed, not to mention an anxious public still worried about health and safety while traveling due to COVID-19, most folks stayed home this summer. Or at least close to home, with a possible road trip or two in the mix. Now that we’re firmly into fall, though, one hotel chain is hoping to lure hesitant bookers back with some incredible points bonuses and discounts, even at its most luxurious properties.
World of Hyatt windfall
World of Hyatt is the loyalty program of over 900 hotels comprising more than 20 brands. Those include high-end labels like Park Hyatt and Miraval, but also trendier offshoots like Andaz, Alila Hotels & Resorts, and Thompson Hotels, among others. The program also partners with other hospitality companies, such as MGM Resorts, Small Luxury Hotels of the World (SLH), and even adventure outfitter Lindblad Expeditions, to let members earn and redeem points on their travels.
From October 1, 2020, through January 4, 2021, World of Hyatt will be running a potentially lucrative campaign dubbed, “Bonus Journeys,” where members can earn triple points at all Hyatt locations worldwide. Previously booked reservations count, but members must register for the promotion by November 30, and only stays completed after registration and with a checkout date on or before January 4 will be eligible.
For a little perspective on just what a great deal this could be, non-elite World of Hyatt members usually earn five points per dollar on stays and other charges at hotels and spas that participate in the World of Hyatt program. With this bonus, you’re looking at earning a total of 15 points per dollar, and that’s not including any other bonuses you might earn if you have elite status with the program.
On the redemption side of the equation, World of Hyatt properties are broken down into eight categories. Award nights run from 5,000 points for budget options like Hyatt Place locations, to 15,000 points for solid mid-range properties like the chic Thompson Chicago, all the way up to 40,000 points at a handful of high-end accommodations like Copenhagen’s famous Nimb Hotel and barefoot-luxe Calala Island in Nicaragua, both of which participate in World of Hyatt through their membership in SLH.
With those numbers in mind, you’d need to spend just $334 at Hyatt during the promotion to earn enough points for a reward night at a Category 1 hotel, while if you want one of the 40,000-pointers in Category 8, you’re looking at $2,667 in spending. Somewhere in the middle, if you splashed out $2,000 on stays, you’d end up with 30,000 points. That’s enough for a reward night at some of the nicest hotels within Hyatt, including Andaz Maui at Wailea Resort, or the sumptuous Park Hyatt Paris-Vendôme, where room rates regularly top $800 per night, so you’d be getting a pretty good return on your spending.
