McKINNEY — The stakes were high in the second meeting this season between Denton Guyer and Prosper in Saturday’s Class 6A Division II Region I final.

Quarterback Eli Stowers again led Guyer past Prosper 30-24 in triple overtime at McKinney ISD Stadium as Guyer advanced to the state semifinals. Guyer will face Cedar Hill at McKinney ISD Stadium at 1 p.m. Saturday.

Stowers finished off Prosper with a 5-yard touchdown run in the third overtime, reminiscent of his game-winning score in the teams’ last meeting Oct. 30, a 24-23 Guyer victory. The Texas A&M signee didn’t have his best game with just six completions, two interceptions and one touchdown pass.

Guyer’s defense was the key, forcing a missed Prosper field goal to start the third overtime after allowing just 10 points in regulation.

Stowers finished strong and had three rushing touchdowns.

Stowers had to watch on the sideline in 2019, hobbling on crutches as Guyer lost in the state championship to Austin Westlake. He’d like this year to be different.

“Obviously, it was a tough situation last year to be hurt on that first drive of the state championship game,” Stowers said. “To be able to get this close to a state championship game is a blessing.”

Saturday’s game was tight and low-scoring through regulation, which ended with the teams tied at 10. Prosper quarterback Jackson Berry opened overtime with a 6-yard touchdown run. Stowers responded with back-to-back rushing touchdowns, forcing Berry to respond in the second overtime.

Berry, who finished 22 of 38 for 163 passing yards, connected on his lone passing score to Cameron Harpole to force the third overtime.

That would be the last score of the season for Prosper.

The win was special for Guyer’s first-year head coach Rodney Webb. As coach at Rockwall, his team knocked off Prosper in 2019.

The matchups with Prosper have always felt unique, Webb said.

“Two very evenly matched teams. Those guys over there at Prosper do a great job, and it’s very difficult to just run off and leave them,” Webb said. “They are competitive with everybody they play, and it goes right down to the wire, win or lose.”

Prosper’s defense was stout Saturday until overtime. The offense moved the ball more efficiently than Stowers and Guyer, but Berry had a pair of costly interceptions in the red zone.

Now Guyer moves on, with the goal of a first state championship since 2013, when it was a 4A team.
