Four Bloomington residents are dead in an apparent triple murder-suicide that was discovered Sunday morning.
According to Bloomington Police Capt. Ryan Pedigo, evidence indicated that a 61-year-old man shot and killed his 54-year-old wife, 26-year-old daughter, and 18-year-old son.
Police were called to the residence in the 2600 block of S. Olcott Blvd., for a welfare check on residents after a woman discovered a friend dead. The woman had gone to pick up her friend, and when nobody answered, she unlocked the door and discovered her friend was dead. The woman called 911.
When officers arrived, they found four people dead from gunshot wounds. Police said the motive for the shootings is unknown, and under investigation.
Neighbors said they saw several vehicles from the fire department, and ambulances arrive at the home around just after 10 a.m., but they soon left. The police put up yellow tape, and began to investigate.
The Bloomingtonian observed police tape across the front yard of the house, and around the sides of the yard. Police officers worked at the scene, but one officer who stood at the door stood with his hands folded.
A woman at the scene hugged another woman, and then left. Officers backed her vehicle out of the driveway, and under the police tape.
An evidence technician took an evidence box for a handgun inside the home. Animal control arrived, and took a small dog to a waiting van, and then later a cat in a cat carrier.
Eventually a white van arrived at the scene, and two bodies were loaded into the van. The first body was loaded at 1:34 p.m., and then a second smaller vehicle backed into the driveway, and the fourth body was loaded into it at 1:53 p.m. Then the garage door to the home was shut, and police began to take down the police tape.
All the police left the scene, and the house stood as nothing had happened, a fan could be heard spinning in a window upstairs. A car sat in the driveway with New York plates.
A while later, a young woman pulled up in a silver car and ran to the door. She began to cry, and a woman approached her before she collapsed, and began to scream.
The woman then got up and tried to kick the door down, and then sat on the front lawn sobbing.
A neighbor said the woman is the girlfriend of the son who had returned home in March due to COVID. Another neighbor said the 61-year-old man who had killed the three others had been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer.
A police officer eventually arrived and began to talk to the woman who had just learned that everybody in the house died.
Stunned neighbors, some who had tried to help the crying woman before the police arrived, stood around and tried to piece together what had happened.
“The names of the victims will not be released until notification can be made to next of kin. Autopsies for all four deceased individuals will be scheduled in the coming days. No further information will be released at this time,” said the BPD in a press release.
