Nathan Eovaldi picks up the win, works around trouble in Rangers debut - The Dallas Morning News

ARLINGTON — Make that consecutive games that one of the Texas Rangers’ much-anticipated pitching additions has developed into the ‘B’ plotline.

That, in these instances, has been a good thing. The Rangers’ offense has been busy making history with 27 runs — including 16 in a second-straight win over the Philadelphia Phillies on Saturday — in their first two games.

Their 11-run outburst in Thursday’s season opener allowed Jacob deGrom’s bumpy start to go a bit more unnoticed than it could have otherwise. Another double-digit run scoring effort in game two’s 16-3 win pushed Nathan Eovaldi’s debut further down the headlines, too.

You won’t hear much complaining from the pitcher who benefited from those runs, of course.

“It’s very nice,” Eovaldi said.

Eovaldi, in his first start for the Rangers after signing a two-year, $34 million contract in December, gave up three runs on six hits in five innings pitched and earned the win. He struck out six batters and stranded three runners in scoring position to keep Philadelphia’s offense at bay as Texas’ vamped up.

“Good and bad,” Eovaldi said. “I feel like the first two innings I was really good, felt like I was commanding my zone and trusting all my pitches well. Maybe the second time through the lineup I tried being perfect, which I didn’t need to be.”

The Alvin native struck out TreaTurner (on a 96.7 mile per hour fastball) and Kyle Schwarber (on a 90 mph splitter) to open the game, then gave up back-to-back singles to JT Realmuto and Darick Hall. A baserunning miscue bailed Eovaldi out in the first as Realmuto overran second and was thrown out by left fielder Josh Smith when he tried to scamper back to the bag.

After a 1-2-3 second inning, Eovaldi stranded Jake Cave — who walked to open the third and advanced on a stolen base and a groundout — at third base with a flyout from Schwarber.

Realmuto led off the fourth with a walk and Hall followed with a double. Nick Castellanos sent a 101-mile-per-hour comebacker up the middle, which bounced off Eovaldi’s right ankle and ricocheted into the outfield for a two-run double. Bryson Stott followed with another double (which right fielder Robbie Grossman lost in the sun), but Eovaldi got Alec Bohm to ground out and struck out Cave and Marsh to end the inning and strand two runners in scoring position.

“You look at how competitive he is in those situations,” Rangers manager Bruce Bochy said. “Great job, [runners on] second and third and it’s a 4-2 ballgame and he kept them from scoring. He threw some great pitches to keep it at that score.”

Eovaldi said he felt fine after Castellanos’ double bounced off his leg, and that the ball hit “all muscle”. Bochy said that Eovaldi could have kept pitching, but the team opted to pull him after five innings and 82 pitches. Eovaldi’s pitch limit, Bochy said, was somewhere around 90.

Turner led the fifth inning off with a triple to right field — which Grossman also lost in the sun — and scored on a Schwarber groundout.

“I try to take pride in, if there’s errors or if there’s sun balls or unfortunate luck, just being able to pick up the defense,” Eovaldi said. “It’s really the only opportunity to be able to pick those guys up. They have multiple ways they’re able to do it — making another nice play, driving in a run. I try to pick them up in those situations.”
