Twins’ Garlick loses some sleep over latest callup - St. Paul Pioneer Press

A heavily caffeine-fueled Kyle Garlick was in the Twins’ starting lineup on Saturday night after being recalled from the Triple-A Saints. Garlick replaces outfielder/first baseman Joey Gallo, who was placed on the 10-day Injured List due to a left hamstring strain.

Garlick got the news in Buffalo at 10:30 Friday night after playing a game for the Saints. He got to bed late after packing and had a 4 a.m. wakeup call. His flight, which included a stopover in Chicago, got him to Minneapolis at 10, leaving a short amount of time for a nap before heading to the ballpark.

“We’re grinding a little bit,” Garlick said before the game. “But I’ve got my Starbucks, and I’m mentally preparing to go tonight.”

This is Garlick’s third stint with the Twins this season, and he said he had no idea the latest move was coming.

“We were kind of hanging out in the clubhouse after the game (Friday night) just playing some cards,” he said. “Then we see (Saints manager) Toby (Gardenhire) come over to the table. There was a hand full of us who could have been called up. (Matt) Wallner is going off in Buffalo. (Trevor) Larnach is down there rehabbing. And (Jose) Miranda is starting to turn it around a little bit.”

One reason the right-handed-hitting Garlick got the call is that the Twins are scheduled to face a number of left-handed pitchers in the coming days, including Saturday. Wallner is a left-handed hitter.

Garlick hit a couple of home runs last week and drove in four runs with the Saints and said he’s feeling comfortable at the plate after making some adjustments the last time he was with the Twins.

“I felt like my posture and stance was a little bit different than in years past,” Garlick said. “So just standing a little bit more upright I think allowed me to see the ball a little bit better. My swings were good, but I think it was affecting my swing selection.

“I think I’m swinging at better pitches and getting myself into better counts.”

Gallo was a late scratch from Thursday’s lineup after tweaking the hamstring strain that he has been playing with. Twins manager Rocco Baldelli said afterward that the plan was to keep Gallo on the sidelines for a few days, with a decision on whether that meant putting him on the IL to come.

Managing the pain

Baldelli was not at the ballpark and missed his regular media session prior to the game due to what he described as some stomach issues that arose overnight. He informed the team that he hoped to make it to the ballpark by game time, and he was in the dugout for the first pitch.

Bench coach Jayce Tingler spoke with Baldelli on the phone before the game to set a lineup. Their choices were limited, with shortstop Carlos Correa still sidelined with plantar fasciitis in his left foot and designated hitter Byron Buxton still sore after getting hit in the ribs with a pitch on Thursday.  Kyle Farmer started his second consecutive game at short.

Tingler said he would check with Buxton to see about the possibility of being available to pinch-hit. Alex Kirilloff was given the day off after playing regularly at first base, and with Ryan Jeffers serving as DH, the only other player on the Twins’ bench was outfielder Max Kepler.
