A small number of Rolls-Royces are on board the Fremantle Highway, the shipping vessel that caught fire north of the Netherlands with cars aboard last week. The brand is informing customers who were impacted by the fire personally about the fate of their undelivered cars.
The total number of Rolls-Royces aboard the ship is not known, but Automotive News reports that "a low four-digit number" of the 3783 cars on board the ship were built by BMW and its subsidiaries. That could include all of Rolls-Royce, Mini, and BMW itself, so a fraction of those cars will have come from the English ultra-luxury manufacturer. Previous reporting suggested the ship also had around 350 Mercedes products on board.
Unlike the Volkswagen-laden Felicity Ace that sunk after a fire last year, the fire aboard the Fremantle Highway was put out and the ship was able to reach a harbor in the Netherlands. According to German newspaper Bild, 800 of the cars aboard the ship are still intact after the successful recovery of the burned ship. One member of the ship's crew was killed in the incident, while 23 people were rescued either from the ship directly or from the seas after jumping overboard to safety.
Although the source of the fire has not yet been confirmed, early Coast Guard reports suggested that an electric vehicle fire likely started the bigger blaze. The ship's cargo is now said to have included 500 EVs, significantly more than the 25 first reported last week.
