Weekend system may bring some accumulating snow to Massachusetts
THROUGH THIS SUNDAY. TURNING NOW TO THE WEATHER AND MORE RAIN. YOU WAKE UP THIS MORNING, YOU’RE LIKE, IT’S RAINING AGAIN. PRETTY GOOD DOSE OF IT TOO. WE HAD THREE QUARTERS OF AN INCH OF RAIN FALL IN BOSTON SINCE MIDNIGHT, ABOUT A THIRD OF AN INCH DOWN TOWARD THE CAPE, BUT A LOT OF US HALF AN INCH A LITTLE BIT HIGHER. SO ANOTHER GOOD SOAKING. AND THIS IS ON TOP OF THE RAIN THAT FELL YESTERDAY. I MEAN, LOOK WHERE WE ARE FOR THE MONTH. WE’VE HAD OVER SIX INCHES OF RAIN AND THEN YOU ADD WHAT WE GOT TODAY. SO WE’RE CLOSING IN ON AROUND SEVEN INCHES OF RAIN FOR THE MONTH OF JANUARY. AND AGAIN, A LITTLE BIT OF THAT HAS BEEN SNOW. BUT IT HAS BEEN A WET MONTH FOR SURE. RIGHT NOW JUST SOME AREAS OF DRIZZLE LEFT HERE DOWN TOWARD CAPE COD BAY ONTO THE CAPE. PATCHY LIGHT DRIZZLE IS ABOUT THE EXTENT OF ALL. WE’RE GOING TO SEE THE REST OF THE AFTERNOON. AS YOU CAN SEE, THE STEADIER RAIN IS SHIFTING OFF STORE. THEY DID GET SOME SNOW OUT OF THIS ACROSS PARTS OF NORTHERN NEW ENGLAND. THERE WAS A LITTLE ICE THIS MORNING TOO. ACROSS PARTS OF CENTRAL NEW ENGLAND AS WELL. BUT THIS WAVE OF MOISTURE IS BASICALLY IN THE PROCESS OF MOVING OUT. AND AS IT MOVES OUT, IT’S GOING TO TAP INTO SOME OF THIS COLDER AIR AND START TO ALLOW SOME OF THAT TO DRAIN SOUTHWARD. YOU HEAD FAR ENOUGH SOUTH, LOOK AT THE TEMPERATURE IN WASHINGTON, D.C. RIGHT NOW. THAT’S NOT A MISTAKE. IT IS 74 DEGREES IN WASHINGTON, D.C. RIGHT NOW. SO THEY ARE ON THE WARMER SIDE OF THIS FRONTAL BOUNDARY THAT’S BEEN HANGING AROUND AND GIVING US OFF AND ON MOISTURE THROUGHOUT THE WEEK. WE’RE 35 IN WORCESTER RIGHT NOW, 38, LAWRENCE, 40, IN BOSTON. IF YOU’RE HEADING OUT THIS AFTERNOON, TEMPERATURES CHANGE VERY LITTLE. THERE MIGHT BE A PATCH OR TWO OF DRIZZLE, BUT JUST A LITTLE HEADS UP. SEE, AS WE GO INTO TONIGHT, IT’S INDICATING THE POTENTIAL FOR SOME DRIZZLE AS THE TEMPERATURES ARE DROPPING WITH THAT NORTHERLY WIND. JUST BE CAREFUL. THERE MIGHT BE A COUPLE SLICK SPOTS DEVELOPING AS THOSE TEMPERATURES DROP, AND IF ANY FOG AND DRIZZLE KIND OF SITS ON A SURFACE, IT COULD MAKE THINGS A LITTLE BIT SLICK. OTHER THAN THAT, WE WAIT TILL OUR NEXT STORM, AND THAT’S COMING IN AS A COASTAL STORM SUNDAY INTO MONDAY MORNING. THIS WILL START AS RAIN FOR A LOT OF US AND THEN CHANGE OVER TO SNOW SUNDAY NIGHT INTO MONDAY MORNING, AND I THINK IT’S GOING TO BE THE BIGGEST IMPACT. RAIN AND SNOW SLOWING DOWN TRAVEL. COASTAL WIND NOT A HUGE ISSUE. THE WINDS GET A LITTLE GUSTY AT THE COAST AND COASTAL FLOODING NOT A BIG CONCERN. TIDES ARE RUNNING ASTRONOMICALLY LOW. THANKFULLY, THIS GO AROUND THERE. YOU SEE ON FUTURECAST TAKING YOU INTO THIS EVENING SOME OF THAT PATCHY DRIZZLE THAT COULD BE AROUND EVEN INTO TONIGHT. SO HEADS UP, WATCH FOR A FEW SLICK SPOTS AS WE DROP TONIGHT BETWEEN ABOUT 30 AND 35. COLDEST JUST NORTH AND WEST OF BOSTON TOMORROW. WE’RE IN THE 30S TO NEAR 40 DEGREES. IT’S A MOSTLY CLOUDY BUT DRY DAY. WE’RE CATCHING A BREAK HERE AS THIS NEXT STORM ORGANIZES HERE. PULLING MOISTURE OUT OF THE GULF OF MEXICO. AND HERE IT COMES UP THE COAST SATURDAY NIGHT. SO WE’RE WAKING UP TO IT ON SUNDAY, AND IT IS WITH US ALL DAY LONG. NOW. THERE’S NOT A LOT OF COLD AIR AS THIS MOVES IN AND INITIALLY. SO I THINK ON SUNDAY WE’RE ACTUALLY GOING TO SEE A GOOD AMOUNT OF RAIN HERE INSIDE OF 495. BEST CHANCE OF GETTING SNOW DURING THE DAYLIGHT HOURS ON SUNDAY IS GOING TO BE REALLY NORTH AND WEST OF 495. THEN, AS THE STORM STRENGTHENS AND GETS A LITTLE BIT CLOSER, WE START TO TURN THOSE WINDS TO THE NORTH. SUNDAY NIGHT. THAT’S WHEN WE’RE GOING TO START TO SEE SOME OF THAT CHANGEOVER FROM RAIN TO SNOW INTO THE BOSTON AREA. SO BY MONDAY MORNING THERE WILL BE SOME SNOW. AND THIS IS GOING TO SLOW DOWN THE MONDAY MORNING COMMUTE AS THIS KIND OF GRADUALLY PULLS AWAY ON MONDAY. SO IT’S A MIX FOR A LOT OF US. MORE RAIN THAN SNOW DOWN TOWARD THE CAPE. BUT WHERE IT DOES STAY MOSTLY SNOW FOR A GOOD DURATION OF THE STORM. THAT’S WHERE WE COULD SEE SIX INCHES OR MORE, PARTICULARLY WITH ELEVATION. OTHERWISE, IT’S JUST A FEW INCHES IN AND AROUND THE BOSTON AREA. AND I WOULD SAY IT’S THE OVERNIGHT HOURS SUNDAY INTO MONDAY MORNING THAT IT WILL HAVE THE BIGGEST IMPACT ON TRAVEL. SO KEEP THAT IN MIND AS YOU’RE HEADED BACK TO WORK AND SCHOOL ON MONDAY MADE IT AN IMPACT WEATHER DAY. WE’RE ALSO GOING TO HAVE WIND GUSTS AT THE COAST ON MONDAY MORNING, UP OVER 40MPH, SO A LITTLE GUSTY AT THE COAST. NOT AS MUCH OF AN ISSUE INLAND, BUT BEHIND THIS STORM, HERE COMES ANOTHER ROUND OF COLD. AT LEAST IT WILL COME WI

Weekend system may bring some accumulating snow to Massachusetts
A storm lifting up the coast Sunday may bring some accumulating snow to parts of Massachusetts and New England, depending on its track. StormTeam 5 is watching the track of the storm system, and it may pull down colder air, flipping the precipitation over to snow all the way to the coastline."It will start off as rain for a lot of us and then change to snow Sunday night and into Monday morning as colder air wraps in," StormTeam 5 Chief Meteorologist Cindy Fitzgibbon said. Future model runs will give better insight into how much snow to expect and the exact timeline of when mixed precipitation changes over to snow."As we get into Sunday, there may be an initial burst of snow late morning over the interior. Through Sunday afternoon, the rain is predominant east of Interstate 495 — better chance of snow through the Worcester Hills and western Massachusetts. On Sunday night, the rain/snow line collapses back toward the coast, and it may end as some snow on the Cape," Fitzgibbon said.Areas far north and west of Boston could see more than 6 inches of snow. About 3 inches may fall inside I-495, and there will be less in southeastern Massachusetts and the Cape. After that system moves out, it will turn colder once again, with temperatures on Monday and Tuesday possibly not hitting the freezing mark.
