College students looking forward to a spring break getaway will have to wait for another year, as some New Jersey colleges cancel spring break amid coronavirus fears.
Ramapo College and Seton Hall University have both canceled their spring break, hoping it will discourage travel and stave off the on-campus spread of the virus.
“The amended calendar creates a condensed Spring 2021 semester and is intended to mitigate student and employee travel to other regions which, upon return to NJ and our campus, could increase the risk of spreading COVID-19,” Ramapo officials said in an email sent out to students on Tuesday.
Both colleges will also start their semesters later in the winter compared to a typical year. The late start is an effort to avoid having students in class during the height of flu season and to give students from quarantine list states the chance to isolate, Seton Hall spokeswoman Laurie Pine said.
Fall break was also canceled, and students will switch from a hybrid learning plan to a virtual learning plan after Thanksgiving for the same travel-related concerns, Pine said.
“The schedule was designed to reduce cyclical risks of virus spread during colder months and to avoid the possibility of students, faculty and staff members traveling home for fall break and Thanksgiving, contracting the virus, and returning to campus with nascent cases of COVID-19,” said Pine.
Not all New Jersey colleges are canceling spring break. Spokesmen for Rutgers and Montclair University said no changes have been made to their spring calendars and spring break is still scheduled.
A number of colleges in the Garden State, including Rutgers, Princeton, and TCNJ, offered remote-only classes during the fall semester. Seton Hall and Ramapo both offered a blend of virtual and in-person classes in the fall.
