Two Jersey City gang members have been charged with murdering three people in 2017, including a rival gang member and his pregnant girlfriend, U.S. Attorney Craig Carpenito said Monday.

Markell “Sayboy” Brown and Terence “Sweet Meat” Shaw, both 32 and members of the Neighborhood Bloods street gang, are facing life in prison if convicted in the Jan. 16, 2017 murders of Ishear Bailey, 26, his girlfriend Janaya Lee, 25, who was four months pregnant, and Quadel Chisolm, 31, who was an associate of the two accused killers.

Brown and Shaw are charged with conspiracy to commit murder in aid of racketeering, three counts of murder in aid of racketeering, three counts of discharging a firearm in furtherance of a crime of violence, and three counts of causing death through use of a firearm.

Authorities say Brown and Shaw had Chisolm gain access to the Bailey’s Fulton Avenue apartment and then entered the apartment shortly after 10 p.m. to kill all three people. Brown and Shaw executed Bailey, shooting him in the back of the head, the left arm and the right shoulder, authorities said.

They also shot Lee in the back of the head and the chest. As Brown and Shaw left, they shot Chisolm in the chest in order to eliminate the possibility that he would provide information to law enforcement, authorities said.

Carpenito credited the Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office and the Jersey City Police Department and special agents of the FBI with the investigation that led to the charges.

This investigation was conducted as part of the Jersey City Violent Crime Initiative (VCI), which was created in 2018 by the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of New Jersey, the Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office and the Jersey City Police Department for the sole purpose of combatting violent crime in and around Jersey City.

The VCI is composed of the U.S. Attorney’s Office, the FBI, the ATF, the Drug Enforcement Administration’s (DEA) New Jersey Division, the U.S. Marshals, the Jersey City Police Department, the Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office, the Hudson County Sheriff’s Office, New Jersey State Parole Board, the Hudson County jail and the New Jersey State Police Regional Operations and Intelligence Center/Real Time Crime Center.

Brown, long believed to be associated with gangs, was arrested on gun charges in what police called “a gang meet-up” less than one month after the triple murder. In 2015, he was charged with attempted murder.
