Sophomore Josi Borum delivered the program's first triple-double in 12 seasons, and the Youngstown State volleyball team outlasted Robert Morris for a five-set victory on Monday evening at Beeghly Center. The set scores were 25-15, 23-25, 25-22, 21-25, 15-11.
Borum had 17 kills, 17 digs and 22 assists for the first triple-double by a Penguin since Karla Everhart in the 2008 season. Those are believed to be the only triple-doubles in program history.
Borum, a transfer from Chicago State, got help from another former Cougar as Isidora Sisic had a career-high 13 kills and 10 digs to post a double-double. Alexia Byrnes added 13 kills in a team-best .333 attack percentage.
Margaux Thompson paced the defense with a match-high 30 digs, and Youngstown State had 98 digs collectively. Aimee Beaupre matched her season high with four blocks, and Lexie Beeke had 27 assists.
The Penguins snapped a six-match losing streak with the victory, and they are now 3-6 in the spring season. Robert Morris, which had five players finish with between eight and 12 kills, dropped to 0-11.
Youngstown State hit .294 in the opening set, and it closed it out with an 11-3 run to take a 1-0 lead in the match. The Penguins were even better offensively in the second set as they hit .366 behind seven kills from Borum, but the Colonials hit .389 and hung on for a 25-23 win to even the match. Sisic had six kills, and Robert Morris had 12 attack errors in the third set as YSU won 25-22, but the Colonials took the fourth 25-21 to tie the match.
Borum had a kill to start the fifth set, and Youngstown State never trailed. Robert Morris tied the score at 4-4 and 7-7, and the first three-point margin in the set came when an attack error gave the Penguins a 12-9 advantage. The Colonials scored twice out of a timeout to get within one and force a YSU timeout, and the Penguins scored the final three points of the match. Mirna Sarjanovic came off the bench to commit a serving error for RMU, and an ace by Thompson and a kill by Sisic finished off the win.
Youngstown State will go for the series sweep on Tuesday when the teams play again at 5 p.m. The match will be broadcast live on ESPN+.
