Bad Axe is now 9-2 overall and 8-2 in conference play.
Himmel, making her first start of the season, led the way for the Hatchets with 20 points, 13 rebounds and 11 blocks. The sophomore set a new single-game school record with those 11 blocks. Other leaders on the night for Bad Axe were Kate Clancy with 9 points and Camryn Affer and Alexis Booms with 5 points each. Sophie Shuart had 4 points, Callie Engler and Claire Castle each chipped in 2, and Haley Newland and Madison Kinney each had 1 point.
Top scorers for Caro were Adelyn Moore with 26 points and Kenzie Schmidt and Jacquie Peters with 4 points each. Kayleigh Garza chipped in 2 points.
Bad Axe head coach Kurt Dennis said his team executed their game plan well on Tuesday night, knocking the Tigers off their own, which involved using the press in an attempt to slow down the Hatchets’ offense. Dennis said he wanted to begin prepping his team for districts, so Bad Axe experimented with lineups and defense on Tuesday. Regular starters Shuart and Booms got a bit of a break, with Himmel and Engler starting the game for the Hatchets.
But it was Himmel’s dominating performance that was the story of the night, and Dennis said the fact the that she is only a sophomore makes it even more remarkable.
“You don’t see that in girls basketball very often,” Dennis said.
Dennis said making sure players are getting minutes and gaining valuable experience is always important this time of year. It’s even more important in 2021, he said, with the potential threat of COVID-19 keeping players out of the lineup.
The Hatchets have to regular season games remaining: a home tilt against the Unionville-Sebewiang Patriots on Thursday and a road game at Vassar next Tuesday.
The Hatchets and Patriots tip off at 7:30 p.m. Thursday.
