The Reno Aces’ roster is beginning to take shape in a hurry.
As the Diamondbacks cut their spring camp roster before the 2021 regular season, several top prospects have been optioned to Triple-A Reno as a result. Below is a list of notable prospects optioned to Triple-A Reno.

- J.B. Bukauskas, RHP
- Stuart Fairchild, OF
- Corbin Martin, RHP
- Luis Frías, RHP
- Andy Young, INF
- Humberto Mejiá, RHP
Observations:
Perdomo, 21, is the most recognized of the group thus far. He ranks as MLB Pipeline’s third prospect in the system and No. 79 overall on its Top 100 list. He hasn’t played above High-A ball in the minors, but the use of instructs and alternate training sites last season has brought him up to Triple-A in 2021. It will be interesting to see how Perdomo adjusts in such a hitter-friendly environment, and he’s well on his way to making his MLB debut if his bat improves while showcasing his defensive prowess at shortstop.
Along with Perdomo, a bevy of intriguing pitching prospects will be worth keeping an eye on. Bukauskas pitched four scoreless innings this spring before being optioned. His fastball-slider combination played well off one another with impressive spin, and it was encouraging to see his command improve on the hill. Martin will make his first full season with the D-backs since coming off Tommy John surgery in 2019. For someone who didn’t pitch much in summer camp, Martin’s fastball velocity sat 92-94 and touching 97-98 with notable sink and fade.
Friás joins the bunch as another right-hander starting the year in Triple-A Reno. The fastball explodes and his curveball continues to refine its shape and depth. We will see just how much his changeup or slider has improved as a viable third pitch along with his command. If he makes strides in both areas as he did at points last summer, he can carve out a role as a backend starter.
Fairchild and Mejiá were both acquisitions at the trade deadline last season. Fairchild was part of the trade that shipped Archie Bradley to Cincinnati, while Mejiá was part of the Starling Marte package to Miami. Fairchild may lack a true plus tool at this point, but he’s solid across the board with above-average speed, fielding and approach. He has a chance to break out offensively and tap into more in-game power in Reno this season.
Young is quite familiar with the Reno Aces, batting .271/.368/.535 with 21 homers in 2019. He arrived to Reno at the latter end of midseason and helped the club mash a franchise record 242 home runs. Young made his MLB debut last season, but it may be difficult to find consistent at-bats in the big leagues this season.
More prospects will be optioned to the minors as the spring treads onward, and we’ll get a clearer picture of who starts where in the near future. For now, Reno’s roster is already filled with several intriguing names.
