FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – The Kansas State track and field teams enjoyed a successful day at the NCAA Indoor Championships, as senior Tejaswin Shankar, junior Chantoba Bright and freshman Rhianna Phipps all collected All-America honors in the triple jump competitions on Saturday (March 13) evening at the Randal Tyson Track Center.
"I thought the ladies handled themselves very well in their first NCAA indoor meet," said Director of Track and Field and Cross Country Cliff Rovelto. "The quality of competition is very high, and it takes time to reach a comfort level. Today's triple jump event was TJ's (Tejaswin Shankar) fifth of his life. He competed three times this year in indoors, once last year in indoors, and once five years ago in high school. He has come a long way in a short period of time. He is also using a short approach still. If he decides he wants to continue working on the triple (jump), he will be very good. He did a nice job of competing in both events this weekend."
Shankar concluded his stay at the NCAA Indoor Championships with yet another All-American honor, recording an 11th-place finish in the men's triple jump. With little room to spare, he left his mark in the sandbox with a leap of 15.97m/52-4.75, earning Second Team All-American honors.

After placing third in the men's high jump on Friday, Shankar becomes the first Wildcat in the men's field to own spots in two All-American categories at the national indoor meet since Matas Silkauskas in 2012.
"I was pretty happy with the triple jump," said Shankar. "This was literally the third competition for the year and fifth of my life in this event. I only come from 12 strides, as I am still getting used to landing on one leg. So, being able to hover around 16 meters for the last two meets, I'm pretty excited with what's in store for the future."
The national winner in the men's triple jump was Oregon's Emmanuel Ihemeje, who took the collegiate lead with a remarkable leap of 17.26m/56-7.50.
Two other Wildcats made their mark in Saturday's events, which featured Bright and Phipps staking their spots in the women's triple jump.
Bright went on to capture her second All-American podium spot this weekend with a leap of 13.26m/43-6, earning a spot at 10th overall. Phipps competed in her first event at the NCAA Indoor Championships during the triple jump competition, as she showed that she belonged among the nation's elite, collecting the second All-American performance of the day on the women's side with a mark of 13.18m/43-3, which landed her in 12th place.
"My first time competing at nationals was not what I expected, but I was overwhelmed living in my dream of being here," said Bright. "Although I may not have performed to the best of my ability, I went out and gave it my all. I didn't get to accomplish the goals I've set out for myself, but I must say, I've learned a lot from the experience and now its back to the drawing board. I feel grateful for the lessons learned and opportunities earned, so I will take this along with me in life to make myself better. I had the chance to compete with the best of the best and that's a dream come true."Another All-American accolade for TJđ@TejaswinShankar clinched Second Team All-American honors in the men's triple jump, posting a mark of 15.97m/52-4.75 to score 11th in the event!!
