MADISON (WKOW) -- This week, some students in Madison will start heading back to class for the first time since last spring, at the same time their teachers will start to get vaccinated against the coronavirus.
Kindergarteners will be back in class Tuesday, 1st and 2nd graders go back next Tuesday and 4K students return Tuesday Mar. 23.
"I'm in the camp, lets get them in as soon as possible," said Sara McGaughy, whose son Cole entered 2nd grade at the start of this school year.
She said Cole was off to a good start, but that didn't last long.
"I don't know if mental health is the right phrase to use or not but, he's just gotten really sad this year, not having any interactions with any kids his age or any face-to-face interactions with his teachers," she said.
That's why she says her family is very excited that MMSD students will be able to start coming back in person starting Tuesday.
Cole will return next Wednesday.
"It feels like there's hope, but there's still some concern about him going back. We feel like people have a good handle on how to open school safely, in terms of COVID, but there's still a little concern there," McGaughy said.
There's not 100 percent consensus on the return to in-person.
On the 27 News Facebook page, some parents say they don't feel safe having their kids go back, despite the safety measures and vaccinations for teachers beginning.
One said they'll stay virtual until their daughter graduates in the spring, which MMSD has offered to all families.
McGaughy says she believes MMSD is doing things right and just wants her son's mental health to improve.
"Certainly we've noticed a lot of behavioral changes, and not for the better, so I'm hoping, once he's able to interact with kids his own age, that problem will take care of itself," she said.
MMSD hasn't released any plans for how they'll phase older students back to in-person classes.
Officials have said they'll see how the return goes for younger kids before setting a timeline.
