JACKSON, MI — After hearing testimony from one last witness Friday, Oct. 29, Jackson County District Judge Joseph Filip bound Zacharie Scott Borton over to trial on three murder charges.

Bryan Huttenlocker, detective sergeant from Jackson County Sheriff’s Office, testified on Friday that Borton, accused of fatally shooting three men in Grass Lake over the summer, said “I’m going to spend the rest of my life in prison” when he was arrested Aug. 23.

Huttenlocker also testified that the bullets recovered from the autopsy matched the two firearms used to kill Michael Pauli, 70, and Edward John Kantzler, 70.

Delmar Fraley, 80, was the third victim in the rural Grass Lake slaying.

Officers recovered two firearms, a semi-automatic .40 caliber and a .38 caliber revolver, at the crime scene, said Huttenlocker. Three bullets were located in Pauli and two bullets were located in Kantzler, he testified.

Borton’s defense attorney, Leonard Ballard, pointed out Borton complied with police during the investigation. For example, Borton was helpful when investigators were trying to find the firearms and car keys to Kantzler’s stolen vehicle, the one Borton used to leave the crime scene.

Borton will appear before Circuit Court Judge John McBain for future court hearings. A circuit court date will be set at a later time, according to officials.

Borton was arraigned on Aug. 24 for a total of six charges relating to the three fatal shootings -- three counts of open murder along with one count involving auto theft, unauthorized use of a credit card and second offense of felon in possession of a firearm. Each charge of open murder carries a maximum sentence of life in prison.

Records show Borton was bound over to circuit court on all six counts.
