CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Myles Garrett set a Browns franchise record last week with 4 1/2 sacks against Chicago. In Minnesota on Sunday, he recorded half a sack, but he had to go through three Vikings to get it.
It feels like that should count for more.
The dominating performance Sunday by the Browns defense was about more than sacks. After recording nine sacks against the Bears, the Browns made Vikings quarterback Kirk Cousins uncomfortable on a regular basis. According to Vikings writer Arif Hasan, Cousins was pressured on 27.4% of his dropbacks in the first three weeks of the season. The Browns pressured him 50% of the time, after pressuring Justin Fields more than 50% of the time last week.
“It wasn’t just a one-time thing,” Garrett said after the Browns’ 14-7 win. “As far as applying pressure on the quarterback, and making plays on great skill players, I think we showed up like we were supposed to.”
On a day when Baker Mayfield struggled, Garrett and the defense won this game for the Browns. And on this snap, Garrett won against three Vikings.
CBS shows Mayfield on the sideline before a second-and-9 play for the Vikings in the final minute of the third quarter. At this point, Mayfield was 13 of 24 passing for 112 yards. He would go 2 of 9 for 43 yards the rest of the way. It was not a, “Hey, this guy’s been great,” kind of sideline shot.
Now the play. At the top of the defensive line, the Vikings prepare to help left tackle Rashod Hill (69) on Garrett. On the bottom of the defensive line, Takk McKinley (55) will be blocked by a tight end, while three offensive linemen deal with Malik Jackson and Malik McDowell in the middle of the line.
Garrett is blocked by Hill and left guard Ezra Cleveland, while fullback C.J. Ham chips Garrett on his way out of the backfield. In this moment, it’s three on one.
Ham releases into a route, probably figuring two offensive linemen can handle things. He is wrong. Garrett begins to throw Hill (69) to the side, while Cleveland (72) is left reaching. McKinley (55), against that tight end, and blitzing Denzel Ward, who is blocked by back Dalvin Cook, force Kirk Cousins to step up in the pocket.
Garrett throws Hill to the ground, and closes in on Cousins, as left guard Cleveland is left helpless.
Garrett reaches Cousins and shares this sack for a loss of 4 yards with Ward. It was one of two Browns sacks in the game, and the only one Garrett was part of after recording 4 1/2 sacks last week. But he did have to go through three guys to get it.
