JACKSON COUNTY, MI -- The trial for a man charged in a fatal triple shooting will take “the better part of two weeks,” a Jackson County judge said at a pretrial hearing Friday, Feb. 18.

Zacharie Scott Borton is scheduled for a jury trial before Jackson County Circuit Judge John McBain on March 21.

Borton, 43, is accused of shooting and killing Delmar Eugene Fraley, 80; Edward John Kantzler, 70; and Michael George Pauli, 70. Police said the three men were found dead from apparent gunshot wounds on the morning Aug. 22, 2021 at a home in rural Grass Lake Township.

“We are ready to go to trial,” said Leonard Ballard, Borton’s defense attorney. “We have no expectation that on March 21 we will not be ready to face a jury.”

Jackson County Assistant Prosecutor Steven Idema said he is awaiting DNA analysis of the suspected murder weapon from the Michigan State Police crime lab, which is expected to be completed on March 1. A control date regarding the DNA evidence is scheduled for March 4.

“The train is leaving the station on March 21,” McBain said. “I do not want to hear, from either side, that you’re not ready to go on March 21, or you’re going to have an unhappy jurist.”

Borton was arraigned Aug. 24 on three counts of open murder, car theft, unauthorized use of a credit card and second offense of felon in possession of a firearm in connection with the recent triple homicide. Prosecutors stated during Borton’s arraignment the murder charges are backed up by cell phone tracking and photographic evidence collected at the scene.

Borton was staying at the home of the fatal shooting and was believed to have fled the scene in a vehicle owned by one of the victims, police said. The vehicle was recovered, along with several guns, according to the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office.
