NEW YORK — A second former All-Star has left the Yankees’ Triple-A squad.
Less than a week ago, righty Shelby Miller opted out of his minor-league contract. On Wednesday, the Yankees saw outfielder Ender Inciarte leave the organization before ever putting on pinstripes in the regular season.
The 31-year-old put up solid numbers. In 116 at-bats, he posted a .744 OPS — the fourth-best on the team and the second-best among regulars. He hit .252 with four homers, 11 RBI and a .336 on-base percentage. Inciarte also played a lot of left field (105 innings), and center field (84 1/3 innings) with some right field (49 2/3 innings) sprinkled in.
Inciarte had impressed Yankees manager Aaron Boone in spring training. Boone said that he wasn’t far from the cusp of making the Opening Day roster.
“With Ender,” Boone said on April 4, “I think the one thing we’re seeing is health and we’re seeing that show up I feel like in the way he’s moving in the outfield which has been kind of a calling card for him, one of the things that he’s been great in this league at and why he’s had a really good career. He’s an elite defender out there and I feel like he’s moving really well out there and I think part of that is health. Didn’t swing the bat great, but that can happen in spring training. Right now, he’s just a little bit behind a couple other guys.”
Inciarte was an All-Star in 2017 with the Braves. He won Gold Gloves in center field in 2016, 2017 and 2018.
His offense fell off from 2019-2021, when he hit just .223 in the majors.
