Union Catholic’s Alexandra Bonn wins the girls triple jump at the Meet of Champions, 2022 - NJ.com

Alexandra Bonn learned plenty of lessons from her first appearance at the Meet of Champions last year as a sophomore.

She placed seventh with a mark of 36-04.00 and knew what she had to do to improve.

“It’s definitely been a long year of learning and growing,” she said. “Indoor MoC was a great experience for me but I’ve come even a longer way from indoor to outdoor now.”

Her junior season started well but things have really improved over the last six weeks, which is the perfect time to do so.

“I think my contacts and keeping my momentum through the phases is probably my biggest improvement,” she said. “It’s not even so much form, just building my strength, lifting hard and being more efficient has been my greatest asset.”

All of the hard work and attention to detail paid off on Saturday.

After winning the Non-Public championship with a mark of 37-10.25, the junior put up a 38-6.75 to win the triple jump at the Meet of Champions at Franklin High School in Somerset.

While it helps that she’s another year older with more experience competing in these high-stakes events, a change in mental focus has also helped the junior take the next step.

“Definitely a different mindset about getting into the championship part of the season, especially as a junior looking towards recruiting,” she said. “I’ve changed my diet, I’ve done everything. I’ve been critically focused on trying to do the best that I can and I’m so happy it’s all coming together.”

At this point in her career, she’s also taken on more of a leadership role with the team. And it’s not just one event she specializes in. She competes in a few, including another on Saturday.

Bonn placed fourth in the long jump at 17-10.

“Being an upperclassman now, I feel like I have a lot of great experiences that I can take with me to events like this,” she said. “I want to help younger girls and share some of the same experiences and wisdom with them.”

Saturday’s big victory raises her expectations heading into her senior season.

Rather than stress out about repeating, she instead has one number on her mind and that’s giving her all the motivation she needs.

“To win it again would be amazing but I’m really more focused on my own personal results,” she said. “I would love to go 39, that’s been a mark I’ve been chasing all season. No matter what I do or where I place if I get that, I’ll be thrilled.”

Toms River North’s Ayotunde Folawewo, who won the Group 4 championship with a mark of 37-05.00, placed second at 37-11.50.

Maisha Valme from Elizabeth finished third at 37-8.25 after placing second in the Group 4 championships.
