Forecast Discussion

Colder conditions continue to persist on our leap day for 2020, as northwest flow continues. Air temperatures remain in the upper teens and lower 20's, which puts wind chills in the single digits and teens as well. Even though we have seen some sunshine breaking through the clouds, a mostly cloudy and hazy sky continues to hang around into the overnight. Light flurries and snow showers have been spotted at times, and they will continue to be possible overnight with the cold northwest flow off of the lakes until all the available moisture is rung out by tomorrow morning. Overnight lows will once again be chilly, mainly into the upper single digits and lower teens.

After this few day stretch of blustery cold, we'll finally start warming up again tomorrow. High pressure transitioned overhead and then to our east tomorrow, helping clear skies out gradually and get a more south wind going. Highs will get into the middle and upper 30's, so nothing crazy with warmth yet but we'll notice the difference. All of next week will be defined by minor disturbances that keep skies cloudy, light precipitation chances around, and also keep us warmer. Before that though, the first disturbance arrives early Monday morning when temperatures will be a bit colder. Most of the precipitation looks to hold off until Monday afternoon, but some spotty mixed precipitation is not out of the question at the highest elevations before sunrise Monday morning.

Monday and Tuesday both will see isolated to scattered rain showers in the afternoon, with breaks from the rain during the overnight hours into the morning. Highs will be much warmer, in the upper 40's and lower 50's, with lows in the middle 30's. More scattered rain showers move through Wednesday as we gradually cool down some. Thursday may be the only day of the coming week with no precipitation at all, as the overall flow keeps any disturbances away for one day.

Friday another shortwave drops south, this time with a little cold air at its back. Isolated rain showers could mix with a little bit of snow before departing Friday night. Temperatures are likely to cool back down into next weekend, but as of right now we aren't looking at a major cold snap.
