Shooting near Wilmington schools leaves some parents confused, frustrated - Port City Daily

WILMINGTON — A mid-day shooting near several New Hanover County School facilities earlier this week left some parents feeling like they hadn’t been properly notified or informed of what had happened.

According to the Wilmington Police Department (WPD), on Wednesday, February 26, around 1 p.m. there was a shooting on Ann Street between 13th and 14 streets, across the street from Williston Middle School and the International School at Gregory, and several blocks from New Hanover High School.

According to WPD, several shots were fired and a residence, which had a child inside at the time, was damaged by gunfire. Currently, WPD has no suspects and no further information to make available to the public.

New Hanover County Schools (NHCS) confirmed that a ‘shelter in place’ was initiated for all three nearby schools. According to several parents, as well as posts on social media, automated calls from Williston Middle School went out at 1:30 p.m. However, a call to Gregory parents didn’t go out until 2:50 p.m. — apparently after the school had dismissed students. According to an email to a parent from Gregory Assistant Principal Jean Hall, Gregory and Williston share different ‘PowerSchool’ (school management software) systems, and there was “some degree of lag time” between the two schools.

Some parents voiced concerns that this led to hearing about the shooting from their children before they had any information from the school, leaving them unprepared to explain the event to their children.

In a letter to parents from Gregory Principal Leigh Ann Lampley, the school noted that two classes had been on the school’s playground at the time of the shooting; the letter indicated that those classes would receive support from counselors.

But according to a letter from a parent to the school, there were four — not two — classes outside during the shooting, two 5th-grade classes that were already at recess and two 4th-grade classes that had just started recess.

NHCS issued the following statement about the event:

On February 26, 2020, there was a shelter in place initiated for the International School of Gregory, New Hanover High School and Williston Middle School. A notification call did go out to the parents, the call to the parents at Gregory went out around 2:50 p.m. Due to the timing of the shelter in place, along with the administration securing the campus and ensuring all students and staff were indeed accounted for and in a safe location, sending the call to parents as soon as the shelter in place was lifted coincided with the preparation for dismissal. The district remains committed to clear, effective and timely communication with our families.
