TONIGHT:
A cold front is approaching and as it does so we see clouds increase and a southwest wind at 5-15mph out ahead of the front. Frigid arctic air will be spilling southward throughout the night from northwest to southeast. Temps are right around 20 for places south of the Iron Range and Ely. To the north expect single digits and some snow beginning around International Falls, Ely, and Hibbing in the early morning hours.
WEDNESDAY:
Snow pushes south and east as a cold front moves slowly over the region. Expect snow to begin in the Iron Range around 4-6am and in Duluth around 6-8am. It reaches Ashland near 9-10am and Ironwood around 10am to 11am. We see the snow wrap up by mid afternoon in Duluth. But the snow lingers for the South Shore into Thursday as a cold north wind brings in moisture off the lake and causes some lake effect snow showers east of Ashland. Temperatures top off in the mid to upper 20s around lunchtime and then fall as the colder air pushes southward throughout the afternoon hours. Winds are out of the north at 10-20mph.
SNOW FORECAST:
Expect around 1-2” of snow around the Borderland, IronRange, Duluth, Spooner, and Hayward. The North Shore will see a trace to and inch and the South Shore will get around 2-5” during the span of both Wednesday and Thursday.
THURSDAY:
High pressure sits over South Dakota Thursday morning, a large trough in the jet continues to bring arctic air to the region. Morning lows are near -16 in Duluth with a possibility of -30 around the Range and Borderland. Areas away from the lake in NW Wisconsin will have -20s possible. Expect sunny skies, except for the South Shore, which will have clouds and the chance of lake effect snow. Highs reach -2.
FRIDAY:
Our high pressure system moves to the east into Illinois by Friday morning. This keeps us calm and clear, which makes me go colder than guidance with -17 or the morning hours. The recipe is there for a cold start. In the afternoon a southern flow kicks in and warms us up to 12. Expect partly cloudy skies with the warmer air.
SATURDAY/SUNDAY:
A shortwave in the jet stream swings over Saturday and increases cloud coverage further, and provides a 30% chance of light snow showers. Morning lows are near 9 and highs reach the upper 20s.
Sunday should be dry with morning lows near 10 and highs reaching the low 20s. Skies are partly cloudy as a high pressure system sits over Indiana.
