A Portland man is accused of shooting and killing three people Friday in Northeast Portland.
Brett Edward Pruett, 58, faces murder charges in the deaths of Elmer Edwin Hughes, Tashia Cobb, and Lawrence Murphy, the Multnomah County District Attorney’s Office announced Monday.
Portland police also did not notify the public of the triple homicide until Monday, three days after the killings occurred and two days after officers arrested Pruett. Police have not yet explained the delay.
Police have so far disclosed few details about the killings. Officers said they found the three victims dead at 10 p.m. when they arrived at a home on 122nd Avenue between Brazee and Russell streets.
Court records from 2019 list Pruett’s address on the same block. One of the victims, 77-year-old Murphy, lived directly across the street from Pruett’s listed address in 2019, according to state records.
Officers said they arrested Pruett Saturday afternoon.
Court documents say Pruett has been convicted of 13 felonies and had a warrant for his arrest in San Diego.
He also escaped from jail in California in 1984, according to state documents.
Pruett is charged with three counts of first-degree murder, three counts of unlawful use of a weapon, two counts of being a felon in possession of a firearm, one count of first-degree burglary and one count of second-degree assault with a firearm.
Prosecutors said some of the charges are tied to an assault of a woman Thursday, the day before the shooting.
Pruett’s social media pages say he was engaged to the living victim, who the judge ordered Pruett not to contact, state records show.
Court records as recently as 2018 list the living victim’s address as a residence directly across from Hughes, one of the homicide victims.
Pruett is next scheduled to appear in court July 28.
