A city man is dead and two other people are injured following an incident late Monday night in which someone opened fire on a group of people hanging out in a parking lot in southwest Rochester.

The man killed was identified as Bryson Simpson, 39, in a statement by Rochester Police Capt. Frank Umbrino. An unidentified 37-year-old woman and an unidentified 20-year-old man, both city residents, suffered non-life threatening injuries in the shooting, the statement said.

Police responded to Thurston Road and Flanders Street around 10:25 p.m. Monday after getting a ShotSpotter activation. Shortly afterward, officers received multiple calls for a male shot. When they arrived they found Simpson, who had a gunshot wound to his upper body. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The 37-year-old woman was taken to Strong Memorial Hospital for treatment of her injuries; the 20-year-old man was dropped off at Strong by private vehicle for treatment of his.

No arrests have been made, and anybody with information is asked to call 911 or email MajorCrimes@cityofrochester.gov.

Monday night’s triple shooting follows a weekend that saw 13 people shot in Rochester in 10 incidents, said Police Chief La’Ron Singletary at a Monday afternoon press conference.

Most of those incidents resulted in non-life threatening injuries, but some were serious. And a 29-year-old city man suffered a serious injury to his upper body that is potentially life-threatening in a shooting that happened around 1 a.m. Sunday on Rugby Avenue.

About an hour later as police investigated the shooting of a 16-year-old male near Pennsylvania Avenue and Sixth Street, a group of around 25 people approached, yelling at the officers. Two allegedly grabbed an officer, and one punched an officer. A 30-year-old Rochester man was charged with assault. Three others were charged with disorderly conduct and obstruction.

Singletary addressed that incident during the press conference, saying “it will never be OK to put your hands on a police officer or threaten a police officer.”
