North Texas has been spared from triple-digit heat so far this summer, but that could change soon.
Highs are expected to rise this week, to the upper 90s before the end of the week. By the weekend, Dallas-Fort Worth could see highs in the 100s, according to KXAS-TV (NBC5) meteorologist Grant Johnston.
“Here comes the hot stuff,” he said. “That stretch of triple digits will be with us next week as well.”
Making the triple-digit highs worse, dew points — a measure of how much moisture is in the air — are expected to rise into the low to mid-70s, which will make it feel even hotter, said Bianca Garcia, a National Weather Service meteorologist.
“As we head into the weekend, triple-digit high temperatures and oppressive summer heat is expected,” Garcia said, adding that heat index values could range from the low 100s to 112 degrees across North Texas.
The Weather Service is likely to issue a heat advisory this weekend and into next week, she said. Heat advisories remind people to take breaks and stay hydrated when they spend time outdoors. High temperatures and humidity can increase the risk for heat-related illnesses.
On average, Dallas-Fort Worth records its first 100-degree day by July 1, according to the Weather Service. Last year Dallas-Fort Worth didn’t record its first 100-degree day until July 30.
During a normal year, Dallas-Fort Worth reports an average of 18 days with highs at or above 100 degrees, with most of those in July and August. Last year, the area had 14 days with triple-digit heat.
