Friday night’s matchup between the Sim Giants and Sim Rockies was a rare low-scoring affair at Coors Field. Drew Smyly, who pitched a complete-game shutout in his last appearance against the Sim Rockies, limited the Rockies to one run in the early innings to set up the Giants for the win. Hunter Pence had the big hit of the day with a two-out, bases loaded triple to put the Giants up 3-0 in the third inning. The loss is the third in a row for the Rockies and puts their record at 39-48.
Pitchers duel
Kyle Freeland and Drew Smyly battled early as runs were hard to come by. Freeland, in many ways, out pitched his counterpart, limiting Giants to four hits in 5 ⅓ innings. In the third inning, however, poor defensive plays contributed in a big way. Steven Duggar led off the inning with a ground ball up the middle that was fielded cleanly by McMahon but the throw was off-target (scored an infield single). Smyly then laid down a bunt which was fielded by Daniel Murphy, who decided to throw to second to get the lead runner. The throw was late giving the Giants runners on first and second with no outs. Both would end up crossing the plate on Pence’s bases-clearing triple, which was arguably Freeland’s only big mistake in this outing.
Smyly dealt with traffic throughout the early innings scattering seven hits and issuing three walks over 4 ⅔ innings. He was picked up by the bullpen combination of Tyler Anderson, Jarlin García, Reyes Moronta, and Trevor Gott. The Rockies mustered four base runners over the final 4 ⅓ innings with Anderson picking up the win and Gott getting the save.
RISP challenged
Getting runners on base was no issue for the Rockies, but they failed in several key situations with runners in scoring position. In the third inning, Daniel Murphy came up to bat with the bases loaded and two outs and struck out. Then in the fourth inning, Freeland had a chance to help himself out with runners on the corners and two outs but he struck out. Again in the fifth, the Rockies had multiple opportunities with the bases loaded and scored their only run of the day on a McMahon walk. In the bottom of the ninth, newly acquired Matt Kemp came up to bat with runners on first and second with two outs and he struck out. Kemp really struggled in his Rockies debut going 0-for-4 with a walk.
