Aviators hoping for a reprieve from the coronavirus pandemic received more bad news with the cancellation of multiple late-summer and fall events scheduled for Triple Tree Aerodrome, an idyllic 7,000-foot-long grass landing strip and airplane-camping magnet in Woodruff, South Carolina.
The airfield’s board of directors made the decision to keep their aviation kinfolk safe during rising cases of COVID-19 reported in surrounding Southeastern states and through the Midwest.
“When you attend any of our events, you become part of our family. Families take care of each other and their well-being,” read a July 2 statement by Triple Tree Aerodrome Executive Director Robb Williams. “In the interest of safety for our family, it brings me great sadness to announce that we will be canceling our Fall 2020 series of events.”Pilots will have to wait until early 2021 and the Frosty Dog radio control event or the Chilly Chili general aviation aircraft fly-in to return to the airstrip surrounded by tall southern pines and fishing ponds developed by founder Pat Hartness, who relishes the trademarks of “fun, fellowship, and hospitality.”
The Triple Tree Fly-In was moved to September 20 through 26, 2021; the Nall in the Fall weeklong radio control event was moved to October 2 through 9, 2021; and the Heli Extravaganza was moved to October 2021, with exact dates to be determined. The Young Aviators Fly-In presented by—and for—young pilots was previously moved to June 18 to 21, 2021.
