The phone call came around 11:30 p.m. Wednesday.

A sleepy Alec Bohm was getting ready for bed ahead of another day of workouts at the Phillies’ Lehigh Valley alternate site when he received the news: The Phillies were calling him up. After the “nice, pleasant surprise,” as Bohm called it, he phoned his parents to tell them. Sixteen hours later, Bohm started at third base and batted sixth in the Phillies’ 11-4 loss to the Orioles.

Bohm, along with fellow top prospect Spencer Howard, was expected to help the Phillies at some point this season. The organization initially figured both would debut after playing at Triple-A Lehigh Valley, with Bohm, 24, more likely on track for a mid- to late-season promotion. That scenario, at least the conventional version, was squashed when the minor-league season was canceled because of the pandemic. Instead, Howard and Bohm made the jump from Double A to the majors without playing a game at Triple...
