Fifty-nine more people died of complications related to coronavirus, almost triple the number of the last record one-day total, San Bernardino County data released Tuesday, Aug. 4, show.
The last grim record was 21 new deaths, which was reported on two different days: July 8 and 23.
County spokesman David Wert said Tuesday he did not immediately know what caused the spike.
Throughout July, the county was averaging about 35 deaths per week.
New deaths by location include 17 residents of San Bernardino, nine from Colton, eight from Victorville, five from Fontana, four from Chino, three from Adelanto, two each from Barstow, Rialto and Yucaipa, and one each from Apple Valley, Hesperia, Loma Linda, Mentone, Oak Hills and Redlands. The number of deaths in the undetermined residence column of the county’s website also went up by one Tuesday.
County health officials also confirmed 585 new cases Tuesday.
With about 2,180,000 residents, the number of known cases accounts for about 1.6% of the population. About 1.4% of those 34,017 confirmed positive patients have died.
