MANHATTAN, Kan.Shelby Martin posted K-State's first triple-double since 2014, as the 13th-ranked Wildcats survived a five-set scare from Oklahoma Friday night at Bramlage Coliseum, 25-23, 25-16, 20-25, 21-25, 15-13.

Martin's 11th kill of the night sealed the victory, helping K-State (5-3, 5-3 Big 12) sweep the series with the Sooners (2-6, 2-6 Big 12) for the first time since 2017. Martin hit .769 (1 error on 13 swings) and finished with 38 assists and 10 digs to become the first Wildcat to record a triple-double since Katie Brand.

"Her competitiveness late in the match, I thought she kind of took it over," head coach Suzie Fritz said of Martin. "To have a setter that can create some offense like she does. We were talking to her like, 'hey, you might need to go get you some, right here.' And so it was a pretty key component at the end of the match when she was able to go get a couple of swings, it was pretty nice."

Martin, a senior transfer, produced the second triple-double of her career. While at East Carolina, she turned in the program's first-ever triple double in 2018 with 10 kills, 14 digs and 34 assists.

"I had no idea I had as many kills as I did until the game ended.," said Martin. "I was just trying to find a way to put the ball down and get points for my team and find some momentum. I never went out with the mentality of 'I'm going to be the show.' I was just trying to find some momentum for our team."

The Waxahachie, Texas, product recorded three kills on four swings in the final set and matched her career high with her 11 kills. Her final kill followed the Sooners fighting off two match points and climbing within a point.

"The pass was there; it gave me an opportunity and they hadn't slowed me down yet so I figured I might as well take it," Martin said of her match-ending kill. "My hitting totally depends on if their middle (blocker) stays with me. They hadn't been with me all night, so I did not feel their middle jump, so I just went ahead and took a swing."

After a second set in which the Wildcats limited OU to a -.062 hitting percentage to stake a 2-0 lead, the Sooners shifted their lineup to better match up with K-State. The change paid dividends as Oklahoma went on to win the next two sets and force a winner-take-all fifth set, tallying 14 blocks over the final three frames. OU ended the match with 19 total team blocks.

"They got a lot bigger by design," added Fritz. "They put a lot of big bodies in front of us and kill production dropped dramatically for us. The combination of passing poorly and then having to throw it outside, it was a nice upgrade for them. Nineteen blocks, that's ridiculous. That was the change that was the most impactful that we didn't adjust to as quickly as we needed to."

Despite managing just six kills in the third set, the Oklahoma defense did the heavy lifting as it recorded eight team in limiting the Wildcats to a match-low .054 hitting percentage. Kelsey Carrington had five block assists in the frame in getting the Sooners their first set victory of the weekend.

"Adjusting when you're talking about hitting against big blocks is your swing production has to change a little bit," Fritz said. "You have to go about it a little bit differently. But they posed some pretty significant challenges for us, particularly for our left sides.

"We're thrilled to get the win. I thought Oklahoma made some really nice changes. I don't want to take anything away from them, but I think we are happy to kind of sneak out of that one, is how we're feeling."

Freshman Aliyah Carter led the Cats with 17 kills for the second straight night. Holly Bonde (11) and Kadye Fernholz (10) rounded out four players to reach double-digit kills for K-State.

The Wildcats held a 59-46 advantage in total kills while out-hitting OU, .159-.120.

Libero Mackenzie Morris had a team-high 18 digs while Jacque Smith chipped in 13. Morris added a pair of aces.

Sanaa Dotson led Oklahoma with 16 kills while hitting .324. Guewe Diouf recorded a dozen kills along with four service aces. Libero Keyton Kinley led all players with 26 digs.

Next up, the Wildcats will prepare for the 2020 Dillons Sunflower Showdown on Thursday and Friday at Horejsi Family Volleyball Center in Lawrence. Both matches will be broadcast live on Big 12 Now on ESPN+ and Rob Voelker will have the call on News Radio KMAN (93.3 FM, 1350 AM) with free, live audio available at K-StateSports.com/watch.
