NORMAN, Okla. – In the second of three outdoor meets for Oklahoma State's track and field team, its most notable performances at the John Jacobs Invitational at Oklahoma included a school-record triple jump from Saara Hakanen and an event win for the Cowboys' 4x400 meter relay team.
Hakanen's wind-legal, third-place 13.17m leap came in dramatic fashion. The Finnish sophomore jumped the distance in her third attempt, but the official wind reading – 3.0 meters per second – missed the mark as an OSU all-conditions school record.
Unphased by an unlucky gust of wind, Hakanen hit the mark again in her sixth and final attempt with a wind legal reading of 1.3 meters per second. Hakanen is now the Cowgirls' all-time performer in the indoor and outdoor triple jump.
"Saara competed very well today," jumps coach Zivile Pukstiene said. "She jumped a school record that we are very happy with, but there's so much still there for her. She scratched a couple big jumps today that would've placed her comfortably on the national leaderboard. Regardless, it's good to know that she is really close to landing those big jumps. We just have to keep working on her take off from the board and I'm confident we'll see some more records with her name on them."
As Hakanen set the tone with a record-breaking day from the sand pit at the John Jacobs Track & Field Complex, the Cowboys followed suit to finish out the meet. Ashton Hicks, DJ McArthur, Cooper Newsome and Cash Merutka teamed up to win the men's 4x400 meter relay, finishing in 3:08.14. The time bumps Oklahoma State from ninth to sixth in the Big 12 4x400 meter relay leaderboard.
Earlier in the day, the Cowgirls' got a relay win of their own in a Bedlam duel 4x100 meter relay. As the only two teams in the race, Oklahoma State took the lead early thanks to a strong start from Nicolette Dixon in the lead leg. From there it was the work of Aaliyah Birmingham, Christina Ollison and Brooke Givens that earned the women's relay unit the event win over in-state rival Oklahoma in a time of 45.45, a season best for the Cowgirls.
Along with Hakanen, the Cowboys' 4x400 meter relay and the Cowgirls' 4x100 meter relay, the Pokes' tallied 27 total top-10 performances, with 17 of those being top-5 finishes.
Birmingham continued on her standout senior season in the women's 100 meters. She finished as the runner-up with a 11.47 pace. Givens joined her teammate in the top 10 of the straightaway sprint, clocking in at 12.08 in seventh place.
Ollison showed off her speed in the women's 400 meters shortly after contributing in the 4x100 meter relay win. The junior finished in the runner up spot, crossing the finish line in 54.44. Ollison ended her day with a third-consecutive top-five finish after earning a fourth-place finish in the women's 200 meters with a 24.73 pace.
As the second of two-consecutive meets from the John Jacobs Track & Field Complex ends, Oklahoma State will set its sights on another action-packed weekend. OSU athletes will compete at the Longhorn Invitational at Texas, the KC Qualifier hosted at the University of St. Mary in Leavenworth, Kansas, and the Rock Chalk Classic at Kansas
