When Logan Webb stepped into the batter’s box at Oracle Park on Sunday, Giants pitchers were 0-for-29 with 20 strikeouts and no walks on the season.

The Giants’ pitching staff is a walking advertisement for the designated hitter, but with one loud swing, Webb reminded fans of the rare sense of joy that follows when a pitcher helps himself out at the plate.

With Marlins right-hander Paul Campbell behind in the count 3-0, the reliever tossed a fastball down the middle that Webb drilled into the right center field gap for a two-run triple. The ball left Webb’s bat with a 109.0 mile per hour exit velocity, making it one of the hardest-hit balls by a Giants player this season.

It’s almost always a good sign when Giants pitchers are mentioned in the same sentence as Tim Lincecum and that’s what happened when Webb raced around the basepaths to reach third. His triple was the first by a Giants pitcher since Lincecum hit one on June 21, 2013 against Ricky Nolasco of the Marlins at Oracle Park.

Webb’s triple was the seventh hit by a Giants pitcher since Oracle Park opened back in 2000, but just the second in the last decade. Prior to Lincecum’s triple, Jonathan Sanchez’s triple on the final day of the 2010 regular season in a division-clinching win over the Padres was the last belonging to a Giants starter.

With the implementation of the designated hitter in the National League during the 2020 season, Webb’s triple was also the first hit by a Giants pitcher since Webb singled on September 28, 2019 against the Dodgers.
