'Must Be Some Accountability': First Black OPD Chief Says Chauvin Verdict Was Justified | netnebraska.org - NET Nebraska

A Minnesota jury's guilty verdict in the Derek Chauvin trial Tuesday was justified, a former Omaha Police Department chief said.

Thomas Warren, the police department's first Black chief and now CEO of Urban League of Nebraska, said the actions of the former Minneapolis police officer led to George Floyd’s death last May.

“It was excessive – an unnecessary use of force that wasn’t compliant with any form of law enforcement training that I am familiar with," Warren said. "There must be some accountability for law enforcement officers when engaged with abuse of authority – especially if it leads to death.”

Warren led OPD, Nebraska’s largest law enforcement agency, from 2004 to 2008, and he said he now hopes for more changes to policing.

“In this instance, hopefully," he said, "this verdict does restore some faith in the criminal justice system as it pertains to law enforcement because no one is above the law.

Chauvin was led away in handcuffs after the judge read the jury's verdict, which found the Chauvin guilty on all counts – including second- and third-degree murder and second-degree manslaughter – for the killing of Floyd last May. A sentencing hearing will take place in roughly eight weeks, the trial judge said.
