There was a lot of movement not in only the coaching cycle but also in the portal over the past couple of days. In this edition of the Triple Threat Alert, I highlight where Stanley Umude and Kyler Edwards are within their transfer recruitment. I also give my take on the season Brock Cunningham will have for the Texas Longhorns next year.
STANLEY UMUDE STARTING TO FINALIZE THINGS
If it were not for technical difficulties, Umede would have had an article of his own as he is arguably one of the best players in the portal. However, the audio refused to pick up the conversation but the thankfully I took enough notes to recap.
Due to an impressive 2021 season averaging 21.6 PPG, 7 RPG, & 3 APG last season for South Dakota, the 6-foot-7 wing out of San Antonio (Texas) has been heavily recruited by multiple high major programs across the states. However, Umude says that Arkansas, Arizona, Clemson, Kansas, TCU, Texas, and Texas A&M has been recruiting him the hardest.
A great relationship with the coaching staff and the ability to showcase his talents at the high major level will be prioritized when Umude makes his final decision. He mentioned he is in the final stages of his recruitment and is currently in the process of cutting his list. As of now, it looks as if Bill Self and the Jayhawks have the most momentum.
WHO WILL HAVE A SHOT AT KYLER EDWARDS
After the announcement of Chris Beard's hiring at Texas, Kyler Edwards was one of three Red Raiders to announce their intentions to transfer last week.
Not having officially entered portal until today, expect multiple power conferences members to reach out to Edwards. The 6-foot-5 guard out of Arlington (Texas) averaged 10 points, nearly five rebounds, and three assists per game last season.
Playing for an offense where he can solely focus on putting in the ball in the basket should be valued by Edwards here. With that being said, expect for Houston and LSU to get involved since programs are expected to lose big time scorers to the NBA Draft.
BIG SEASON AHEAD FOR BROCK CUNNINGHAM IN 2022
Thought I should clear things up on a tweet I put out after Texas Longhorn forward Brock Cunningham announced his thoughts on new head coach Chris Beard.
The common college basketball fan looks at Cunningham as just a motored up glue guy whose only value is winning all fifty-fifty ball matches and being on the receiving end of opportunistic buckets. However, he is that and much more. The 6-foot-6 four man out of Austin (Texas) is more than capable of facing up and has a reliable mid range game from 15-17 feet.
Will Cunningham be the go-to guy he was in high school when he led the Adidas Guantlet in scoring with 23 points per game? Probably not. However, he will get to show more of an array of those faceup skills offensively.
Cunningham is a key returning player who Beard has admired the last few years while coaching at Texas Tech. His role will likely expand and Longhorn fans should see the best version of Cunningham yet next season.
