Daniel Shirey / Getty ImagesJason Vosler is riding the Sacramento-San Francisco express with fellow roster yo-yo Steven Duggar, and Sunday it was Vosler’s turn to go back to the Triple-A River Cats.
Vosler, a utility player, was optioned to Sacramento to make room for starter Johnny Cueto on the roster. He appeared in four games and made two starts in his most recent stint with the Giants, and he did not reach base in six plate appearances.
Manager Gabe Kapler said that he’d had a good conversation with Vosler when he was sent out and “just said, ‘Look, this is not about your at-bat quality. We haven't really given you a long string of at-bats to be able to get where you need to be.’
“He completely understood that perspective. We told him that it would be good for him to get consistent reps at Triple-A.”
Vosler made his big-league debut last April, and he has never been a bench player before. Kapler said he’s impressed with the work that Vosler is doing to acclimate to that role, speaking to Darin Ruf and Kapler about how to best prepare and even asked to come off the bench and play left some at Sacramento in order to be more valuable when he’s back with the Giants. “He was a total pro about it,” Kapler said.
The Giants bench will be a little short Sunday as a result of the move, with four men available rather than their usual five.
