The Mets’ injury list still reads like a small novel, but positive news is on the way for a few players.
The returns of first baseman Pete Alonso, infielder J.D. Davis and outfield Albert Almora, Jr. appear to be on the horizon in the coming weeks.
Their pending returns will follow Taijuan Walker, who was activated off the injured list and started Saturday’s game against the Atlanta Braves. Walker was initially slated to start Friday, but his activation was pushed back one day due to a rain out.
Alonso took batting practice off a high-velocity pitching machine on Friday, and he came through that workout feeling good. He’s been out since May 18 with a hand injury.
Even with the relatively short layoff as far as IL stints are concerned, Alonso may not jump directly into the MLB lineup when he’s ready. The Mets may elect to send him on a rehab assignments first.
“Initially that’s how I felt. I felt that he needed to see some pitching and actually get pitched to,” manager Luis Rojas said. “But looking at him, he looked a lot better than I expected to see him swinging, and his confidence level is high.”
Alonso isn’t the first Met to deal with a hand injury this season. Davis also had that issue, along with outfielder Brandon Nimmo. Both those players went on rehab assignments, where they ran into setbacks and delayed their return to the MLB lineup.
With the Mets going on a road trip to Arizona and San Diego this week, they don’t want to be in a situation where Alonso starts a game, then isn’t able to finish. Once they get him back into the lineup, they want to ensure he stays there.
But while Rojas and the training staff are leaning toward a rehab assignment for Alonso, they’re leaving the door open for him to jump right back into the MLB lineup.
“Next couple days, some more of those tests and what we can do can give a comfort level of maybe he won’t need it,” Rojas said. “Initially we thought he might, the same way Nimmo and J.D. did.”
Davis returned to New York early last week following a brief rehab assignment, where he dealt with more hand pain and a stiff neck, so the Mets needed to briefly shut him down again.
But Davis was expected to resume swinging again over the weekend, and if all goes well there, he could head back out for more rehab games. Davis said earlier in the week he thought they had a much better grip on his hand issue.
Almora, Jr., who suffered a shoulder injury while colliding with the outfield wall on May 11, started swinging on Friday, and he has resumed full baseball activities.
The outfielder will still need more time before he’s ready to appear in rehab games, but Rojas said he’s trending in the right direction.
“He’s here early every day, really early, getting his treatment, progressing into baseball activities. He might have a week or so more of baseball activity, then eventually we’re going to see him soon going into a rehab assignment. Right now he’s moving so well.”
