Keaton Frye’s RBI triple lifts Jacksonville past Routt - Jacksonville Journal-Courier

Keaton Frye lined a triple over the left fielder’s head to drive in the game’s only run as the Jacksonville baseball team beat crosstown rival Routt and senior left-hander Cory Ronan 1-0 in front of a big crowd at Future Champions Sports Complex on Monday.

Ronan was coming off back-to-back no-hitters. The Crimsons reached the University of Hawaii recruit for five hits to go with six walks. But Ronan kept Jacksonville off the scoreboard until the bottom of the sixth inning.

Jacksonville’s Ryan Maul, who had been a thorn in Routt’s side all game, beat out an infield single with one out in the sixth. Ronan picked him off, throwing to first as Maul took off for second, but the throw from the first baseman to the shortstop was high and wide, and Maul was safe.

Then up came Frye, who was supposed to move Maul over with a sacrifice. “Well, I went up there, got the bunt call and messed it up twice,” he said. “And then — I mean, we needed something to start, and that did it. I know it came late, but thanks to our pitching and our defense, we were able to keep them at nothing the whole game. It was a good win. We needed that.”

Frye isn’t necessarily known for his power at the plate. Anticipating a play at the plate, Routt’s outfielders were playing in a little.

Still intent on trying to get Maul to third, Frye smacked the ball hard. “Honestly, with one out, I was just trying to put the ball in play, move the runner to third,” Frye said. “So, I mean, I did that.”

Jacksonville pitcher Nolan Decker matched Ronan pitch for pitch. He threw a complete-game two-hitter, striking out six and walking one. Decker threw a first-pitch strike to 17 of the 24 batters he faced.

“I just focused on my fastball early in the count, and got them with the off-speed,” Decker said. “My defense helped me a lot. It felt good.”

Jacksonville wasn’t intimidated against Ronan. The Crimsons have seen plenty of good pitching in the past two weeks.

“It’s always exciting to go against a good pitcher — it happens a lot in CS8 ball,” Decker said. “He’s a really good pitcher. We just had some timely hits.”

Jacksonville had a few scoring opportunities earlier in the game. The Crimsons loaded the bases in the second on a hit batter and two walks, but Ronan struck out the final two to end the inning.

Decker singled with one out in the third but was picked off first. The next batter, Drew Ezard, doubled but was left stranded when Ronan got the last out on a fly ball to right.

Maul reached on an error in the fourth and was picked off first, but made it to second safely. Frye tried to bunt Maul over to third but popped the ball up just enough for Ronan to come in, go to one knee and make the catch. Ronan sprawled to the turf but scrambled to his feet and threw to second to double off Maul.

After hitting the triple, Frye tried to score on a wild pitch but was tagged out at home plate.

Jacksonville improved to 9-5.
