ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Minor League Baseball (MiLB) and Major League Baseball (MLB) announced Wednesday that 10 games have been rescheduled for each of the 30 Triple-A teams, including the Rochester Red Wings.
The games will be played in a new post-season tournament called the Triple-A Final Stretch.
That means that after the current 120-game Triple-A championship season schedule, there will be an additional series on the road against the Worcester Red Sox and a final home stand against the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders from September 29 to October 3.
It's not exactly being called the playoffs, but each Triple-A league will crown a regular season champion based on overall winning percentage and one single champ of the final stretch based on the highest overall winning percentage during the extra 10 games.
The winning club will be awarded a prize from MLB.
“We think this format will add excitement to the end of the season while also allowing our teams a chance to reschedule games that were lost earlier in the year,” said Major League Baseball senior vice president of minor league operations and development Peter Woodfork said in a statement. “With all 30 teams participating in this Final Stretch, all Triple-A players and communities will have the opportunity to win this year’s postseason tournament.”
The Red Wings front office says tickets for the Final Stretch go on sale next Friday, July 23 at 10 a.m. at the ticket office and online.
