Joshua Fuentes has been excellent in the field but has struggled mightily at the plate, so the Rockies optioned him to Triple-A Albuquerque Thursday prior to their game against the Padres in San Diego.
In other moves, Colorado activated right-handed pitcher Ashton Goudeau — who was acquired from Cincinnati Thursday morning — and recalled right-handed pitcher José Mujica. Either Goudeau or Mujica could be available to start Friday night’s game against the Padres in the event the Rockies trade right-hander Jon Gray.
The Major League Baseball trade deadline is 2 p.m. (MDT) Friday and rumors continue to swirl that the Rockies might trade Gray. He is scheduled to start Friday night.
Fuentes is hitting .228 with a .618 OPS and has drawn only 12 walks in 276 plate appearances. On the road, he’s batting just .151 (19-for-126). He went 2-for-4 Wednesday night against the Angels, but those were his first hits since the All-Star break. He’s batting .190 (24-for-126) with two doubles and three home runs over his last 46 games.
“Josh needs to exhale and get back on the horse in Triple-A, and get back to that mental place where he’s in a good spot … getting hits and being Joshua Fuentes,” manager Bud Black said. “Any time you slump, it’s frustrating, first and foremost for the player. So let’s get that frustration out and get him back to (being) the player we know he’s capable of being. He was disappointed, but he understood.”
Fuentes’ 10 defensive runs saved are the most among big-league third basemen, according to Sports Info Solutions.
