It appears to be the first triple slaying in the county in nearly three decades
TOWN OF HAMILTON, Wis. (WKBT) — The three victims from Friday morning’s triple homicide in the town of Hamilton have been identified, according to an update from the La Crosse County Sheriff’s Office Saturday morning.
The three people found dead between Holmen and West Salem Friday morning are males, believed to be in their 20s.
Sheriff Jeff Wolf says he expects the names of the victims will be released later on Saturday.
Law enforcement is working to identify the victims of what apparently is the first triple homicide in the county in nearly three decades. One of the victims is believed to be white, and the other two appear to be Asian, according to a sheriff’s office news release Friday evening.
Authorities believe that all three have connections to or have lived in the La Crosse area, but they have not determined the relationship among the men.
Sheriff’s deputies responded to a report of three people found dead at 4:57 a.m. at the entrance to the Milestone Quarry, or Romskog Quarry, in the town of Hamilton.
Two employees of Milestone Materials arrived for work and found the bodies, he said.
“We believe at this time that it was a targeted act. We do not know the reason for the homicide. There were no vehicles left at the scene,” Wolf said.
Investigators believed the crime happened while it was dark.
“It’s a very fluid case at this time. It’s a very complicated crime scene,” Wolf said.
Wisconsin Department of Justice Division of Criminal Investigation, Wisconsin State Crime Lab, Wisconsin State Patrol, The La Crosse County District Attorney’s Office and La Crosse County Medical Examiner’s Office were all at the scene Friday.
The sheriff asks people who live on Hwy. M north of West Salem or on Hwy. S near Onalaska to save security footage and provide it to the La Crosse County Sheriff’s office to try and identify any vehicles involved in the crime.
“We are getting a lot of information. It is coming very fast … We are following up on a lot of things right now,” Wolf said.
No names will be released until the victims are positively identified and the next of kin are notified, Wolf said. Autopsies are scheduled for Saturday morning in Rochester, MN.
The sheriff’s office will share more information on the investigation when it can, Wolf said. People are being asked to avoid the area.
Milestone Materials is a division of Mathy Construction Co. It provides stone, crushed stone, sand and gravel products, according to its website.
This is the first time three people have been slain at one time in La Crosse County since Sept. 26, 1992, according to historical archives of the La Crosse Public Library.
In that case, the bodies of 29-year-0ld Suzzette Frydenlund; her mother, Celia Weibel, 55, and her stepfather, Leroy Weibel, were found in the Weibels’ mobile home in the Brookview Mobile Home Court between La Crosse and Coon Valley. Frydenlund’s two children were in the mobile home at the time of the murders but found unharmed. Suzzette’s husband, James, 34, of Minneapolis was acquitted after a trial.
In another triple homicide in the county, Bryan Stanley, 29, shot and killed the Rev. John Rossiter, lay minister Ferdinand Roth and parish custodian William Hammes at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Onalaska on the morning of February 7, 1985. When police picked him up near the crime scene, he told officers that he was Elijah. Stanley allegedly was upset that Rossiter allowed girls to read the Scriptures during Mass. Stanley ultimately was judged insane and not legally responsible for the slayings.
