The A’s optioned first baseman Frank Schwindel back to Triple-A Las Vegas on Monday, the first day of the major-league All-Star break.
Schwindel was getting at-bats with Oakland primarily at DH against left-handed pitching and as a pinch-hitter after being called up June 29. He started just two of their last seven games before the break.
No corresponding move was announced. The move could signal confidence from the A’s that outfielder Mark Canha or designated hitter Mitch Moreland - or both - are nearing their returns from the injured list.
Canha missed the final 15 games before the break after landing on the IL on June 25 with a left hip strain. Manager Bob Melvin said Sunday he was unsure if Canha could rejoin the A’s to start the second half or if Canha will require a minor-league rehab assignment.
“I hope so,” Melvin said of Canha returning soon. “But we’ll see how he does during the Break.”
Moreland was placed on the IL on July 4; the team has not specified a reason. Asked Sunday if Moreland could return soon after the break, Melvin said: “I hope so, yeah.”
Schwindel appeared in eight games during his call-up, going 3-for-20 with a home run and three RBIs.
