SPRINGFIELD, Ill. – You may be packing up and hitting the road for a nice getaway this weekend. Illinois officials are trying to make sure your trip is a bit easier by reopening some work zone lanes.
Construction work in many areas across the state was already suspended Friday afternoon. Those non-emergency road closures will be back in place early Tuesday morning.
While this will help with some of the congestion on highways, IDOT officials say people should still look out for construction workers who may be out. That means you should still follow the signs in work zones and obey the speed limit.
“Always be on the lookout for those orange signs and DMS signs that tell you ‘Hey, roadwork ahead.’ There certainly might be roadwork ahead even though it’s a holiday weekend,” said Paul Wappel, IDOT Public Information Officer.
Wappel says people should remember to wear their seatbelt since that is the best defense if you are in a crash. He also noted you should have a fully charged cellphone on you in case of an emergency. But, you shouldn’t use a phone while you’re driving.
Many expect there will be more people taking road trips than ever before after staying inside for most of the COVID-19 pandemic. IDOT officials say you should still expect delays and stay alert.
“A lot more people more than likely are going to be out and about. So, just plan your trip. Take a little extra time,” Wappel said. “You know, be patient and everyone will get from point A to point B safely.”
