ATHENS, Ohio (Fort Wayne’s NBC) — The man police say killed one man and hurt two others in a shooting at a Kendallville gas station appeared virtually in an Ohio court Thursday morning.

24-year-old Matthew Rodriguez is behind bars at the Southeast Ohio Regional Jail, after a police officer in Athens, Ohio spotted his sister's 2010 red Kia Forte at a rest stop early Wednesday morning.

Kendallville police sent bulletins about the car to departments across the Midwest after naming him a suspect in Monday morning's triple shooting at Gallops Party Store and gas station.

Noble County court documents say Justin Smead died inside the convenience store after being shot several times, while Blake Lewis and Alyssa Jeffries were critically wounded.

During a virtual hearing in Athens Ohio Municipal Court, Rodriguez waived his right to an extradition hearing.

Authorities in Noble County indicated they could get him back to northeast Indiana within days, and he could appear in Indiana court as early as next week.

He is being held without bond.
