Credit Card Showdown: U.S. Bank Business Triple Cash Rewards Vs. U.S. Bank Business Leverage Visa Signature Card - Forbes

kmatabunga.blogspot.com

U.S. Bank offers two options for small business owners who want a credit card that earns cash back rewards: The U.S. Bank Business Triple Cash Rewards World Elite™ Mastercard® and the U.S. Bank Business Leverage® Visa Signature® Card*.

Both cards offer a standard cash back earning rate of 1% on general purchases, but they take different approaches to awarding bonus cash back. The Triple Cash Rewards card awards 3% cash back on eligible purchases at gas stations, office supply stores, cell phone service providers and restaurants and 1% cash back on all other eligible net purchases, while the Business Leverage Visa Signature will  award 2 points per dollar spent on eligible net purchases made in the top two categories where the most is spent each month and 1 point per dollar on all other eligible net purchases. Both cards offer unlimited rewards on spending, including in the business categories.

Which card is right for you? Today we cover the high points of each card to help you decide.

U.S. Bank Business Triple Cash Rewards World Elite™ Mastercard® Is Best For:

Cash Back on Gas Stations, Office Supplies, Cell Phone Providers and Restaurants

The U.S Bank Business Triple Cash card’s headline offering is 3% cash back on eligible purchases at gas stations, office supply stores, cell phone service providers and restaurants and 1% cash back on all other eligible net purchases.

If your small business consistently spends heavily in the categories where the U.S. Bank Business Triple Cash offers triple cash back, this card can be a more profitable source of rewards for your small business than the U.S. Bank Business Leverage Visa.

Introductory 0% APR Offer

The U.S. Bank Business Triple Cash Rewards World Elite™ Mastercard® card offers a generous 0% introductory APR on purchase and balance transfers for 15 billing cycles. After that, a variable APR of 13.99% - 22.99% applies. If you are looking to transfer a balance from another small business credit card or finance purchases over the short term, the Triple Cash is the better choice, as the Business Leverage Visa Signature card does not offer an introductory APR offer.

If you are considering applying for the Triple Cash primarily to transfer a balance, it can pay to shop around. U.S. Bank offers its own U.S. Bank Business Platinum* which offers a 0% on purchases and balance transfers for 18 billing cycles, followed by a regular APR of 11.99%-20.99% variable. There are many other 0% APR credit cards out there that are worth comparing if that’s your primary objective.

No Annual Fee

If an annual fee is a concern, the U.S. Bank Business Triple Cash Rewards World Elite™ Mastercard® card is the better choice, as it is offered with annual fee.

The U.S. Bank Business Leverage® Visa Signature® Card* has an annual fee of $0 intro annual fee, then $95. Neither card charges additional fees for employee cards.

$100 Software Credit

A unique benefit of the U.S. Bank Business Triple Cash Rewards World Elite™ Mastercard® card is its $100 annual credit toward recurring software subscription services. Many small business owners pay for subscription software services, such as QuickBooks, Freshbooks or Microsoft Office 360, so a $100 offset of those expenses on a no-annual-fee credit card is an attractive perk. You’ll need to pay for your software subscription monthly, as the terms of the offer state that the credit will be applied following 11 consecutive months of eligible software service purchases.

U.S. Bank Business Leverage® Visa Signature® Card* Is Best For:

Welcome Bonus

The U.S. Bank Business Leverage Visa Signature card has the more generous welcome bonus of these two cards: 75,000 points worth $750 cash back by spending $7,500 in eligible net purchases on the account owner's card within the first four months of account opening. If your business spends about $1,900 a month on expenses charged to credit cards, you should easily be able to meet the spending requirements to earn the card’s welcome bonus.

If your business spending is not quite high enough to meet the spending requirements for the Business Leverage card’s welcome bonus, consider the Triple Cash. Its welcome bonus is lower: Earn $500 in cash back. Just spend $4500 on the account owner's card in the first 150 days of opening an account.

2% Rewards on a Wide Range of Categories with No Cap

If your business spends heavily in categories that are traditionally not awarded bonus cash back, the U.S. Bank Business Leverage® Visa Signature® Card* is worth a look. The Business Leverage card offers cardholders the ability to 2 points per dollar spent on eligible net purchases made in the top two categories where the most is spent each month and 1 point per dollar on all other eligible net purchases.

Where can you earn 2 points per dollar? U.S. Bank lists 48 categories, covering most business expense types, from accountants to wig and toupee stores. A limited number of merchant categories are excluded from cash back rewards.

Paying Merchants that Don’t Accept Credit Cards

Some small business suppliers do not accept credit cards. To give their small business clients a solution, U.S. Bank has partnered with Plastiq. U.S. Bank doesn’t offer many details about the partnership, but the website does mention that you can “earn more rewards with your credit card, even if your suppliers don’t accept credit cards, with Plastiq.” Some credit cards exclude bill pay services from earning rewards, so the assurance that you can use a bill pay service and earn rewards on your small business card could mean more rewards for some small business owners.

Consider Neither U.S. Bank Business Triple Cash Rewards World Elite™ Mastercard® nor U.S. Bank Business Leverage® Visa Signature® Card* For:

Generous Travel Benefits and Perks like Airline Lounge Access

If your small business has you on the road and you’re looking for a card that will offer a full suite of travel benefits or perks like access to airline lounges domestically and abroad, neither the U.S. Bank Business Triple Cash Rewards World Elite™ Mastercard® nor U.S. Bank Business Leverage® Visa Signature® Card* is the card you’re looking for. If you want airline lounge access, concierge services and robust travel insurance benefits, you will want to consider a premium travel credit card.

Cards like The Business Platinum Card® from American Express (Terms apply. See rates and fees.) and the Delta SkyMiles® Reserve Business American Express Card (Terms apply. See rates and fees.) carry annual fees to cover their extensive list of travel perks, so don’t let those annual fees scare you off. Frequently, the value of the benefits and credits these cards offer well exceeds their annual fees.

For a card offering lounge access, free baggage on your preferred airline and other travel perks, consider the best business credit cards for travel.

Maximizing Rewards on Business Travel

For many small business owners, the greatest expenses they incur are when traveling: airlines, hotels, rental cars and restaurants. While you could rely on the U.S. Bank Business Leverage® Visa Signature® Card* for 2% rewards on your top two travel categories, or the Triple Cash for 2% rewards on restaurants, if your spending patterns look like those of many road warriors, there are credit cards available that will give you greater earnings.

If you spend a lot in travel categories and want to maximize your rewards, shop around for a credit card that offers maximum rewards in the categories where you spend the most. There are many cards that offer bonus rewards for travel, but here are a few favorites:

  • Ink Business Preferred® Credit Card—3 points per dollar on the first $150,000 spent on travel and select business categories each account anniversary year. Earn 1 point per dollar on all other purchases .
  • Business Green Rewards Card from American Express*—Earn 2 times per dollar points for each dollar you spend on eligible purchases at amextravel.com; Earn 1 times per dollar points for each dollar you spend on eligible purchases.
  • American Express® Business Gold Card—4 Membership Rewards® points per dollar on the 2 select categories where a business spends the most each month. 1 point per dollar is earned for other purchases. The 4 point per dollar earning rate applies to the first $150,000 in combined purchases from the 2 eligible categories each calendar year. (Terms apply. See rates and fees.)

In addition to the above, take a look at your preferred airline’s co-branded credit cards and the loyalty credit cards associated with your preferred hotel chain. Airline credit cards offer perks that range from free checked bags and early boarding, to accelerated routes to earn top-tier airline status. A hotel chain’s co-branded credit card can also offer a fast-track to status and usually offers among the highest rewards for spending within a given family of hotels.

Bottom Line

Between the U.S. Bank Business Triple Cash Rewards World Elite™ Mastercard® and the U.S. Bank Business Leverage® Visa Signature® Card*, which card will be more rewarding for your business depends on your spending patterns.

If you spend heavily in the U.S. Bank Business Triple Cash Rewards World Elite™ Mastercard®’s bonus categories of gas stations, office supply stores, cell phone service providers and restaurants, or are looking to take advantage of the card’s introductory offer, applying for the Triple Cash card is likely the better choice. If your spending varies month-to-month or you spend heavily in one (or two) of the other 48 categories where the U.S. Bank Business Leverage® Visa Signature® Card* offers 2% cash back, the Business Leverage Visa might be the better choice.
